Troy Takes Game 3 from WKU

BOWLING GREEN, Ky. - Troy held Western Kentucky to its lowest run total of the weekend to avoid a sweep with a 4-2 victory over the Hilltoppers on Sunday.
Troy (17-12, 7-5) struck in the first inning when seniors Clint Robinson, Josh Dew and Kevin Weidlich delivered consecutive singles, plating Robinson for a 1-0 lead.
WKU (11-14, 5-4) answered with two runs in the bottom of the first inning. Scott Kaskie led off with a single and scored on a single from Scotty Colt. Casey Hamilton walked and scored on a base loaded walk to Matt Hightower.
Troy tied the game in the third inning when Robinson and Dew both walked and Robinson scored on Weidlich's second RBI single of the day.
I think this was a must win game for us today,” Troy head coach Bobby Pierce said. I'm proud of our effort to come back and get this win today.”
Troy took the lead in the sixth inning when Weidlich was hit by a pitch, moved to third on a single by sophomore Brett Henry and scored on a sacrifice fly by Ben Woods.
In the eighth inning, the Trojans added another run when Henry reached on an error by Kaskie and scored on a single by sophomore Beau Brooks.
Freshman Tim Wheeler got the start on the mound for Troy and pitched four innings, giving up two runs on four hits. Dew (4-0) came on to finish the game and get the win. He threw the final five innings, giving up two hits while walking four and striking out three.
Weidlich had three of Troy's nine hits against five Hilltopper pitchers. Starter Bart Carter (4-2) worked into the sixth inning for WKU, allowing three runs on six hits to take the loss.
Troy will be back in action Wednesday as the Trojans travel to Marietta to face Kennesaw State (17-12). Game time is set for 5 p.m. (CT).
