TROY, Ala. - Sophomore Kylie Morrissy posted 21-points for the Trojans on Saturday night but it was not enough as Western Kentucky pulled away with the win, 66-53.
Morrissy ended the game 10 for 12 from the field and grabbed seven rebounds to guide the Trojans (12-14, 5-11 SBC) in the game.
Junior Amy Lewis added to the Trojan campaign scoring ten of her own. Sophomore Danielle Realph added eight point and five rebounds against the Lady Hilltoppers (19-6, 13-3 SBC).
Lewis and Morrissy were the only Trojans to put up double-figures for Troy against Western Kentucky.
Crystal Kelly led the Lady Hilltoppers with 34 points as she was 12 for 18 from the field and 10 for 12 from the charity stripe. Kelly also notched a double-double as she pulled down 11 rebounds. Kelly tied her season high for points scored and moved to number three for all-time points for Western Kentucky.
They are very good. They're very athletic and can score from many different positions on the floor. We really had no answer for Crystal Kelly. We had no one that could defend her and we had no one that could score against her. That is just the bottom line truth,” head coach Michael Murphy said.
The Trojans battled back after trailing by as much as 15 with 14:04 remaining, 46-31. Troy was within six-point with 3:49 left, 56-50 but was unable to keep the momentum toward the end as it did not score after the three minute mark.
Troy took an early 13-11 lead in the first half and extended it with eight minutes remaining to seven, 22-15. The Hilltoppers battled back with 3:25 left before the break to take a one point lead, 25-24. Troy did not score again as the Lady Hilltoppers led at the half, 31-24.
Lewis led all scorers at the half with eight points as she was three for four from the field. Realph and Morrissy followed Lewis with six of their own. Realph hit two of three from behind the arc and Morrissy was three of four from the field to add assistance.
We ended the first half with 10 turnovers in our last 12 possessions and that hurt us. We did have some momentum in the first half and we didn't have enough stuff to get over the hump,” Murphy said.
Troy will be back in action on Thursday when it plays host to Sun Belt Conference Eastern Division leader and nationally ranked No. 18 Middle Tennessee. Tip-off is set for 5:15 p.m. at Trojan Arena in a doubleheader with the men's team.
