TROY, Ala.- On a cold night in Troy, senior Clegg Snipes and junior Rob Brown had the hot arms for the Trojans.
Snipes (1-0) threw seven scoreless innings and Rob Brown threw the final two inings to complete the shut-out of the Saint Louis Billikens, 5-0.
Head coach Bobby Pierce couldn't be happier with his pitcher's performance.
"Clegg threw a great ball-game," Pierce said. "To throw seven innings of shut-out baseball and Rob to come in and finish the job, you should never lose in those situations."
The Trojans (3-2) pounded out 11 hits against three Billiken pitchers. Starter Dave Server (0-1) didn't get much help in the first inning when the short-stop made a pair of errors to move the runners around the base path and put two runs on the board.
Snipes did not allow a runner past second base all night. Snipes gave up the only two hits and struck out four. Brown came on in relief in the eighth inning and also struck out four.
Sophomore Brett Henry had a good night on the defensive side. During the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings, Henry made six of the nine outs. On the night, only three outs were made in the outfield.
Freshman Matt Tanzi kept his hitting streak in tact with a home run in the eighth inning as he hit a 1-0 fastball over the wall in left field.
"Tanzi finally hit one sweet," Pierce said. "His home run was a big insurance run for us."
Craze and Tanzi led the Trojans with two hits each. One of Craze's hits was a triple to left center. The ball went past a diving J.D. Dunn and rolled to the wall and Craze never slowed down and came into third standing up.
The shut-out was the first for the Trojans since they beat Texas A&M Corpus Christi 12-0 last February.
The Trojans will be back in action Saturday for game two of the series.
First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
