Tiphanie Baker, a 10-time state high school champion, became the first freshman to ever hold the school's shotput record. She shattered her previous lifetime best by nearly two feet with a toss of 43-feet, 8 1/2-inches, breaking 2004 record of Takia Shoats. Froiday's throw was also over four feet better than her throw at LSU just two weeks ago.
Juzil Rudolph set school record in the long jump with a leap of 19-feet, 3-inches, eclipsing Tiffiny Jones' record set in 1999 by near eight inches. Rudolph also qualified for the 60-meter hurdles final along with teammates Monique Johnson and LaToya Ragland.
Finally, the distance medley team of Martyna Pietryka (3:40 for 1200 meters), Jocelyn Williams (58.5 for 400 meters), Laide Onikoyi (2:23 in 800 meters) and Jenean Corcoran (5:24 in the 1600 meters) broke a ten year old school-record with a time of 12:26:41, nearly six seconds faster than the previous record.
Another top effort for the Trojans on Friday came from Tawanna Meadows, who gained a spot in the 60-meter final with a time of 7.59.
"The ladies had one of their best first-day performances at a two-day competition in the history of the program," Head Coach Bob Lambert said. "I couldn't be prouder of Tiphanie, Juzil, and the entire distance medley relay team. With conference championships just two weeks away, we're excited about these marks and they indicate we getting near some peak performances at just the right time."
