After a nine-day break for Christmas, the Troy Trojans return home to Trojan Arena Saturday night for a Sun Belt Conference tilt against Western Kentucky. Tipoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. and the game will be televised by Fox College Sports Atlantic.
The Trojans (6-5, 0-1) saw their five-game win streak come to an end in their last outing, an 84-73 loss at defending league champion South Alabama. Troy held a 68-66 lead over the Jaguars with 7:39 to play, but managed just one basket, a three-pointer by O'Darien Bassett, on its next 11 shots as USA went on an 18-3 run.
Western Kentucky (8-4, 0-0) was the preseason pick to unseat USA atop the Sun Belt standings, but the Hilltoppers are also coming off a loss in their last outing. After having lost by just three points to both Gonzaga and Northern Arizona, and then taking 11th ranked Tennessee to the wire in an 88-82 loss, WKU dropped a 10-point decision to Southern Illinois in its last outing.
The Hilltoppers are led by senior guard Courtney Lee at 21.8 points per game. The Indianapolis, Ind., native is closing in on the 2,000-point mark for his career and also leads the club in steals and is tied for second in rebounds at 4.3 per game.
Lee is supported by senior backcourt mate Tyrone Brazelton, who leads the team in assists in addition to his 12.0 points per game average.
Bassett leads the Trojans at 17.1 points per game after scoring a team-high 25 in the loss at South Alabama. Senior Justin Jonus continued to struggle with his shooting at USA, hitting just four-of-11 shots while scoring 12 points.
The hottest Trojan of late has been sophomore guard Brandon Hazzard, but he saw only 12 minutes of action against USA while backing Bassett.
