Hazzard Leads Trojans Over Islanders

TROY, Ala- Sophomore Brandon Hazzard scored nine straight points during a 22-9 run in the first half giving the Trojans the lead and they never looked back in a 79-68 victory over the Islanders of Corpus Christi Saturday afternoon at Trojan Arena.

Troy's (5-4) run in the first half started at the 10:33 mark. The Trojans were down five points, 17-12, but the Islanders' lead was short lived. The run lasted just under seven minutes.

Two free throws form junior Tom Jervis is what started the run. Senior Justin Jonus added a three with senior O'Darien Bassett adding a lay-up and a dunk.

After Bassett's dunk, Hazzard took over.

Hazzard sunk a three from the left corner followed by a blocked shot and a steal by the Trojans. Hazzard burried his next after he was left alone at the top of the key. On Troy's next trip down the floor Hazzard scored his ninth consecutive point.

The Trojans were shooting a miserable 20 percent before the run. At the half, Troy was shooting 34 percent and was 7-of-19 from behind the arc.

The second half would see the Trojans win the game from the free throw line. Troy hit 13 of its 17 shots from the free throw line.

Troy forced 17 turnovers and only committed seven.

The Trojans also shot a very impressive 69 percent from the field in the second half.

Hazzard led all scores with 19 points. Bassett added 18 with Jonus tallying 16 points.

Corpus Christi had two players with a double-double. Justin Reynolds had 14 points with 10 rebounds and Demond Watt had 12 points to go along with 12 boards.

Troy has won four straight games after losing four of its first five.

Troy will be back in action Monday night against Jacksonville. Tip-off is set for 7 p.m.
