TROY, Ala. - The Troy University men's basketball will look to bounce back from their season-opening loss to the University of Alabama last Friday, when they play their home-opener against Paul Quinn College Wednesday night.
The game is scheduled for a 7 p.m. tipoff at Trojan Arena.
It will be the first meeting between the Trojans, and the NAIA Tigers. But don't let the NAIA label detract attention away from Paul Quinn, as they have defeated Southern University 84-81 and lost to Alabama State.
“Paul Quinn is coming off a big win at the SMU Tournament,” Trojans head coach Don Maestri said. “They are a very aggressive team that split their two games in that tournament.”
The Trojans will be taking the floor for the third time this season with a pressure defense that has forced 56 turnovers in 80 minutes of action. In their last game, the Trojans forced 25 turnovers by Alabama, and forced the Crimson Tide into a 20 percent shooting night from behind the arc.
Offensively, the Trojans are led by seniors O'Darien Bassett and Justin Jonus with 17 and 15 points, respectively. Between the duo, they shot 12-of-35 from the floor and connected on five three-pointers against the Crimson Tide. Alabama hit just four three-pointers as a team last Friday night.
“Obviously this time of year everyone likes to play games,” Maestri said. “This is our first home game and we are very excited to be able to open our home season. This game is important because we start a four-game road trip (Utah Valley State, Ole Miss, Georgia State and Corpus Christi), so this is a big game.”
Paul Quinn is led by Damien Chisholm, who has scored 19 or more points in all four of the Tigers' games this season. Paul Quinn (2-2) averages 88 points per game, although they have averaged just 78 points per game against NCAA Division I opponents this season.
Following the game against Paul Quinn, the Trojans hit the road to face Utah Valley State November 20 in Orem, Utah.
