TROY, Ala. -- The Troy University Track and Field program has signed three junior college transfers to national letters of intent for the 2006-07 academic year, head women's coach Jill Lancaster announced today.
The three JUCO standouts are Juzil Rudolph of Montgomery, Kametria Smith of Erwin, S.D. and Valarie Brown of Albany, Ga. All three competed this season at Bevill State Community College in Hamilton, Ala.
Rudolph has enjoyed a versatile and successful career at the junior college level. She has earned All-America honors in long jump, high jump, 4x100 meter relay, 4x400 meter relay and the pentathlon during her career. Most recently, she finished second at the 2006 NJCAA National Indoor Championship. Overall, she has won seven Region 22 championships and holds 11 school records.
During the current outdoor season, she has established new personal bests for the high jump (5-5), long jump (19-4), triple jump (40-1 ¼), 200 meters (24.83) and 100 hurdles (15.27).
Smith is a hurdler, winning NJCAA Region 22 championships at 60 meters (2005 and 2006 Indoor), 100 meters (2005 outdoor) and 400 meters (2005 outdoor).. She ran a personal best of 14.79 in the 100 meter high hurdles this outdoor season.
Brown is a three-time All-America selection, earning the honor in the 800 meters (2005 indoor) and 4x400 meter relay (2005 outdoor, 2006 indoor). She is in the Bevill record books for efforts in the 4x400 and 4x200 meter relays, winning 2005 and 2006 Region 22 indoor championships in the former event. Additionally, she won the region 800 meter championship during the 2005 season. She is no stranger to Troy University and the track, setting a stadium record for the 400 meters at the Coach O Invitational with a time of 54.63. The time was also a personal best and a Bevill school record.
This is a very versatile and talented group,” said Lancaster. They will give us a new level of depth that has not been experienced by the women's program before. Juzil is learning new events, but has established herself as a very talented athlete. She has options when it comes to specialties. Valarie is really just a newcomer to shorter sprint events, but has NCAA-type marks. Kametria recently moved to hurdles and is getting better each week. There is a huge upside to all three ladies."
Troy is expected to announce its high school signees in the upcoming days. The team competes at the Florida State Twilight this weekend before its first Sun Belt Championship May 12-14.
