Freshman Cory Harris and seniors Matt VanZandt and Richard Stein will be competing in the decathlon on Thurs. and Fri., and sophomore Erin Clymer will be in the heptathlon on the same days.
This will give these athletes a chance to see what they have to do over the next two months to get ready for the Sun Belt and NCAA Championships in May and June in their specialties,” said Troy head track and field coach Bob Lambert. The rest of the team is anxious to take on some big time competition.”
Showcase athletes at the competition will be seniors Louis Harris, in his first open in the 100-meter run, and Don Pitter in the same event as well.
Senior Michael Acree will look to improve his distance in the men's long jump at the relays.
The men's 4x100 relay team will be composed of freshman LaMar Hicks, Acree, Harris and Pitter.
After his performance at Florida A&M, Senior Michael Heck will again lead the Trojans in the field events. He will be aiming for a qualifying mark in the men's shot put and hammer. Joining him will be junior Ryan Baker.
Junior Scott Crews hopes to challenge the school record in the pole vault after his first-place performance last weekend in Tallahassee, Fla.
On the women's side, sophomore Karla Blankenship will also compete in her specialty, the pole vault. At the FAMU Relays, she broke the 3 year-old school record of 10-0.5 when she went to the height of 10-04.25.
Sophomore Tawanna Meadows and senior Tanisha Davis will compete to qualify in the 100 and 200-meter run.
In women's throws, the team will look for freshman Monique Jordan to continue her performance in the discus and hammer.
The 4x100m relay team will consist of Meadows, Davis, juniors Ronella Gollman and Shakavia Henderson.
This is also a major relay event and we're shooting to qualify both men's and women's 4x100m relay teams,” Lambert said.
With exception of the decathlon and heptathlon, the Trojans begin competition at 8 a.m. on Sat. March 18 in Tuscaloosa, Ala., at the Alabama Relays.
