TROY -- Kylie Morrissy posted her first career double-double Tuesday night with career-bests of 19 points and 13 rebounds to lead Troy to an 83-44 victory over Belhaven Tuesday night at Trojan Arena.
She's really taken it upon herself to be a presence for us inside. I'm a little disappointed in some upperclassmen trying to rebound the basketball. They just don't seem to want to do it but Kylie's picking up for that slack and we're grateful that she is,” head coach Michael Murphy.
Three other Trojans also topped double figures in scoring -- amy Lewis with 18, Brandi Scott 17 and Danielle Realph 14. Lurena Robinson and Lindsey Dukes led the Blazers with 16 and 14 points, respectively.
With the score tied at 4, Troy scored 10 straight points to start a 15-2 run, leading to a 19-6 advantage with 13:37 remaining in the first half. Belhaven closed to within six, 22-16, by using a 10-3 spurt, but nine straight points ended any chance of a Blazers upset. Troy led 39-22 at the break.
We knew that Belhaven would be well coaches and that they would play hard, which they did. I was a little concerned about this game because of the fact we are leaving for New York City tomorrow. I didn't want our team to look past that game and ahead to our trip to New York," Murphy said. "We were also able to get a lot of people playing double digit minutes which was good particularly when playing Army. This will be a very physical game and we got a chance to rest some legs that was important."
The final margin of 42 points was the biggest of the game and came when the Trojans limited Belhaven to just two field goals in the final six-and-a-half minutes. They ended the contest on an 8-0 run.
Troy shot 51.5 percent from the field for the contest, while limiting Belhaven to a paltry 29.4 percent, including a one-of-11 effort from three-point range. The Trojans also held a 45-26 rebounding margin and forced 17 turnovers.
With a 4-1 record, Troy has equalled its best start since the 1996-97 campaign, when it had five wins in its first six outings. The Trojans were also 4-1 last season, but back-to-back contests.
Troy now heads on the road for a pair of games, beginning Friday at Army in West Point, N.Y. The Trojans will spend part of their Thanksgiving break in New York City, taking in the holiday sights.
