Trojans Top Alabama State 4-0 in Home Opener

TROY, Ala. - The Troy University soccer team set a school record with 40 shots in a 4-0 win over Alabama State in their home opener on Friday. The shot total breaks the record of 35 set on August 29, 2003 against Mississippi Valley State.The win was also goal keeper Laura Longard's 10th shut out of her career, making her Troy's career record holder in that category. Her record-breaking shut out was probably also her easiest, as the Trojans (1-1-0) controlled possession for the majority of the game, and did not allow Alabama State (0-3-0) to take a single shot.

Freshman Beth McClendon scored her first collegiate goal in the 14th minute off assists from senior Emily Cobb and sophomore Meghan Matthews. It was the only goal of the half, giving Troy a 1-0 halftime lead.

The Trojans second goal came when Cobb found sophomore Brittany Stoltz inside the box in the 59th minute.

Troy got its third goal when freshman AshleyJo Murry punched in a missed shot by Megan Kosiba in the 80th minute. The Trojans scored its final goal just 1:30 later on a break-away goal by Teresa Herring.

I'm very pleased by our effort,” Troy head coach Diana Niland said. We played with much more intensity than we did in the game we lost. We had a lot of players contribute in this win.”

The Trojans return to action on September 10 at 3 p.m. when they host Alabama A&M.
