Trojans' Comeback Effort Falls Short, Troy Loses 65-61 at Stetson

DeLand, Fla. - Despite shooting 52 percent from the floor, the Troy University women's basketball team was not able to overcome a 16-point deficit as they fell 65-61 at Atlantic Sun opponent Stetson on Saturday.
Alecia Jones led the Trojans (10-13, 9-7 A-Sun) with 16 points, and Amy Lewis finished with 14. Valensia Hairston and Laura Lee Holman added 13 and 10 points, respectively. Holman led the Trojans with seven rebounds. Kerri Fiehrer finished with five assists for the Trojans, and Audrey Muse set a career high with four blocked shots.
The Trojans shot 27-of-52 (51.9 percent) from the floor, including 1-of 4 (25 percent) from behind the three-point line. Troy finished 6-of-8 (75 percent) from the free-throw line.
Stetson's Kristy Brown led all scorers with 20 points. Stetson (12-11, 9-7 A-Sun) shot 30-of-75 (40 percent) from the floor, including 2-of-13 (15.4 percent) from behind the arc. The Hatters connected on 3-of-5 (60 percent) free-throw attempts. The Hatters outrebounded the Trojans 43-29.
Turnovers hurt the Trojans early, as they committed 13 in the first half. Troy led briefly when a Holman jump shot gave Troy a 14-13 advantage with 11:03 remaining. Troy stayed within five point of the Hatters until Stetson, leading 25-21, went on a 11-2 run in the final four minutes of the half to take a 36-23 lead into the break.
The Trojans shot 11-of-21 (52.4 percent) from the floor, including 1-of-2 (50 percent) from behind the three-point line. Troy did not shoot a free throw in the first half. Hairston led the Trojans with nine first-half points.
Stetson shot 16-of-40 (40 percent) from the floor, including 2-of-8 (25 percent) from behind the arc in the first half. The Hatters made both first-half free-throw attempts.
Both teams came out shooting hot in the second half, and Stetson was able to stretch its lead to 49-33 with 14:09 remaining. Troy clawed back, however, and cut the Hatters' lead to four at 57-53 with 4:50 left.
Troy came within two when Holman came up with a steal and a layup off a Hatters' inbounds pass to bring the score to 61-59 with 2:09 left. Stetson scored on the other end to bring the Trojans' deficit back to four with 1:49 on the clock.
Jones scored following a Holman steal to bring Troy back within two at 63-61 with 1:08 remaining. A jumpshot by Nefertiti Walker came off the front of the rim, but Brown came up with the offensive rebound and putback to give Stetson the 65-61 lead with 28 seconds remaining.
The Trojans shot 16-of-31 (51.6 percent) from the floor, including a 0-of-2 performance from three-point range. Troy made 6-of-8 (75 percent) of its second-half free-throw attempts.
Jones led the Trojans with 14 second-half points.
Stetson shot 14-of-35 (40 percent) from the floor in the second half, 0-of-5 from behind the arc. The Hatters connected on 1-of-3 second-half free-throw attempts.
The Trojans return to Trojan Arena for their next game, when they host Florida Atlantic on Thursday at 7 p.m.
