The Troy University baseball team will open the 2005 season this weekend with a three-game series against McNeese State in Lake Charles, La.
It will be the first time the Trojans and Cowboys (0-3) have met on the diamond since the 2002 season. McNeese State holds a 3-1 all-time series lead over Troy.
"This opening weekend at McNeese State is going to be very tough because they have a very good ball club," third year Trojans head coach Bobby Pierce said. "We will have to go down there and play well early in order to try to win the series."
The Cowboys opened their 2005 season last weekend, dropping three games to Louisiana Tech. McNeese played that series without three of its top players, who were suspended. All three are expected to be in the lineup against the Trojans this weekend.
The Trojans are expected to send senior right-hander Landon Brazell (Dothan, Ala.) to the mound for Friday's opening game. Brazell is coming off a 3-1 record last year in 17 appearances for Troy. The Cowboys are expected to counter with junior right-hander Jason Marceaux (0-1). Marceaux allowed just two runs in six innings of work last weekend but suffered a 3-1 loss. Game time on Friday is set for 7 p.m.
Saturday's game, set for a 3 p.m. start, will pit Troy senior right-hander Brent Adcock (Watertown, Tenn.) against McNeese State senior right-hander Seth Lastrapes (0-1). Adcock made 12 starts for the Trojans as a junior and posted a 3-2 record. Lastrapes allowed five earned runs in five innings of work in his season debut this year.
In Sunday's series finale the Trojans will send freshman left-hander Steven Morelock (Abbeville, Ala.) to the mound for his collegiate debut. Morelock was 10-1 as a high school senior with a 0.11 ERA. McNeese State's starter for the 1 p.m. game on Sunday is undecided.
Troy fans wanting to keep track of the Trojans during the opening weekend of play can do so two ways. Game stories and box scores from all three games will be posted on the Troy Athletics web site, www.TroyTrojans.com
, as soon as possible following games. Fans will also be able to listen to the games on Friday and Sunday through the McNeese State radio broadcast on the web at www.McNeesesports.com.The Trojans will open the home portion of their 2005 schedule next weekend with a three-game series against intra-state rival Samford. Friday's home-opener will start at 8 p.m. at Riddle-Pace Field, allowing Trojans fans an opportunity to attend both the home basketball game at Trojan Arena against Jacksonville and the baseball game.
The basketball game is scheduled for a 6:30 p.m. start and will be televised by CSS. All fans attending the basketball game will get free admission to the baseball game with their ticket from the basketball game.
