Troy Rolls to 73-51 Win Over Campbell

Troy, Ala. - A 22-2 run early in the first half propelled the Troy University women's basketball team to a 73-51 win over Atlantic Sun opponent Campbell in Trojan Arena on Thursday. The win is the Trojans' fifth straight, and their seventh out of the last eight.
Amy Lewis led the Trojans (9-11, 8-5 A-Sun) with 18 points. Laura Lee Holman and Valensia Hairston each added 12 points. Troy racked up 21 assists, led by Lewis with five and Audrey Muse and Kerri Fiehrer each contributing four. Hairston led the Trojans with six rebounds.
The Trojans shot 47.4 percent (27-of-57) from the floor. Troy made a season-high eight threes, shooting 8-of-17 (47.1 percent) from behind the arc. Troy connected on 11-of-15 (73.3 percent) of its free-throw attempts. The Trojans came up with a season-high 16 steals, led by Lewis with 4 and Muse and Fiehrer each with three. Troy converted 26 Campbell turnovers into 29 points.
Letitia Dickson led Campbell (7-14, 5-9 A-Sun) with 14 points. Jennifer Lodge and Amber Graham each had four rebounds to lead the Camels.
Campbell led Troy 4-2 in the early goings, but the Trojan defense held Campbell to just two points over the next 9:41 while scoring 22 points, taking a 24-6 lead with six minutes left in the half. Campbell was not able to cut the deficit below 16, and Troy led 35-13 going into halftime.
Lewis led the Trojans with 12 first-half points. The Trojans shot 14-of-34 (41.2 percent) from the floor, including 3-of-10 (30 percent) from three-point range in the first half. Troy was 4-of-4 from the free-throw line through the first 20 minutes. The Trojans had 11 steals in the first half, as Campbell committed 18 first-half turnovers.
"We played great team defense in the first half," said Troy head coach Michael Murphy. "We were creating turnovers and turning them into points."
Campbell shot 4-of-17 (23.5 percent) from the floor, including 0-2 from behind the arc. The Camels connected on 5-of-7 (71.4 percent) of its first-half free-throw attempts.
In the second half, the Camels were able to cut the Trojans lead to 18, trailing Troy 45-27 with 14:33 left to play. The Trojans would not allow Campbell to get any closer, however, as they scored eight straight points to take their largest lead at 53-27 with 12:07 remaining. The Trojan lead would not dip below 21 from then on, as Troy went on for the 73-51 lead.
Holman and Laurie Tinsley each scored seven points to lead Troy in the second half. The Trojans shot 13-of-23 (56.5 percent) from the floor, including 5-of-7 (71.4 percent) from behind the arc, in the second half. Troy shot 7-of-11 (63.3 percent) from the charity stripe in the second period.
Tomika Tomlinson led Campbell with 10 second-half points. The Camels shot 15-of-29 (51.7 percent) from the floor, 3-of-5 (60 percent) from three-point range, in the second half. Campbell shot 5-of-10 (50 percent) from the free-throw line in the second period.
"Once again we had great play from our bench. We got into foul trouble early, but we had players who stepped up and played well for us," said Murphy. "This was a good team win. We had 21 assists, three girls scoring in double figures, and eight of our ten players scored in this game."
Troy returns to action on Saturday, when it hosts Gardner-Webb at 7 p.m.
