TROY, Ala. -- Amy Lewis scored a career-high 23 points and Alecia Jones earned her second double-double in as many games with 16 points and 12 rebounds as Troy held off a Jacksonville State rally, 81-79, Tuesday night at Trojan Arena.
Laura Lee Holman added 13 points, nine rebounds and five assists, while Audrey Muse chipped in 12 points and eight boards for the Trojans (2-0). Five Gamecocks scored in double figures, led by Rebecca Haynes and LaTonya McKinney with 15 each.
With the game tied at 20, Troy rattled off 12 straight points to lead 34-22 with 4:28 left before intermission. A basket and three free throws brought JSU's deficit back to seven with 2:47 left, but Lewis hit one of her two three-pointers with 32 ticks left to make the score 42-32 at the break.
The Trojans led by as many as 16 in the second stanza, 50-34 with 17:01 remaining, but five straight points started a 12-4 run cut that lead in half, 54-46 with 13:26 to play. After back-to-back baskets by Troy and each team trading buckets, JSU used a 13-2 run over two-and-a-half minutes to close to within one, 62-61 with 9:36 left.
A jumper by Lewis and an offensive rebound and subsequent pair of free throws by Jones pushed the lead back to five, where it hovered until the four-minute mark. At that point, Jacksonville State started a 5-0 run that trimmed the lead to 73-72 with 3:15 left. The Gamecocks continued the run to 10-4 to even the game at 77 with 1:36 remaining. Katja Fuess converted a layup and was fouled, but missed the chance to put JSU ahead.
Neither team took immediate advantage -- Troy missing a jumper, but forcing a turnover -- before Muse broke the deadlock with a layup with just under a minute left. After another turnover, Brandi Scott converted a pair of free throws to give Troy some breathing room.
Troy forced a season-high 29 turnovers to overcome a 45.7 percent shooting effort from the floor. The rebounding battle was even at 37.
Troy concludes its season-opening three-game homestand in one week when Birmingham-Southern visits Troy.
