NEW YORK, N.Y. -- Bobby Dixon scored eight of his game-high 26 points in overtime and three other players topped double figures to lead 94-83 victory over Quinnipiac in the opening round of the Tyler Ugolyn Columbia Classic. The Trojans outscored the Bobcats 19-8 to advance to tomorrow's 6 p.m. (CST) championship game against either Columbia or New Hampshire.
Cedric Jackson tallied 14 points and eight rebounds, while Jacob Hazouri also chipped in 14. Redshirt freshman Daryl Davis added 11 and six boards in his first collegiate action. John Winchester led Quinnipiac with 19 points and eight rebounds.
"I thought it was a typical first game," said Troy Head Coach Don Maestri. "We missed some open shots and made poor decisions down the stretch. But on the positive, we didn't fold and came out with the win.
"I thought Bobby Dixon handled the ball well, especially in overtime and that Daryl Davis did a grat job once Sammy got in foul trouble. He played a lot of minutes for his first game in a Troy uniform.
The overtime was all Troy as it took just 13 seconds for a tie-breaking three-pointer by Hazouri. Dixon followed with back-to-back treys and Sammy Sharp added a jumper for an 11-0 run. The Bobcats finally broke into the scoring time after a Jackson free throw had given an 87-75 lead with 1:12 to play.
After taking a 66-60 lead with 10:12 in the second half, the Trojans surrendered an 11-2 run that left them with a three-point deficit with 5:30 left in regulation.
Neither team scored for the next three minutes before a Jackson free throw started a 6-0 spurt that gave Troy a three-point edge, 74-71, with just over a minute left in regulation. After the free throw, Dixon hit a layup, Sammy Sharp converted the second of two free throws and Jackson hit a jumper in the paint.
However, missed free throws nearly cost the Trojans their first 1-0 start in three seasons. Dixon missed the front end of a one-and-one with 34 seconds left, then following a Bobcat layup, Jacob Hazouri not only one of two for a 75-73 advantage with 14 seconds left. Quinnipiac forced overtime on a layup by Victo Akinyanju with 2.6 seconds to play.
Troy shot just 39.7 percent from the contest, including 31.4 percent from beyond the arc, but forced 26 turnovers. The Trojans also held tough on the boards, losing the edge by a slim 49-47 count.
