TROY, Ala. - Trojans junior Audrey Muse scored 20 points and grabbed nine rebounds as the Troy University women's basketball team defeated Austin Peay 68-61 in its season opener on Friday.
Muse was one of four Trojans to score in double figures. Junior Laura Lee Holman finished with 13 points, and sophomore Amy Lewis added 11. Senior Alecia Jones completed a double-double, with 10 points and 10 rebounds.
Ashley Haynes led Austin Peay with 20 points. Kellea Reeves and Amber Bacon each scored 12 for the Lady Govs.
Troy led 19-16 with nine minutes left in the first half. Troy scored on five of their next six possessions to go on an 11-3 run and take a 30-19 lead with less than six minutes to play in the period. Troy maintained at least a nine-point lead for the rest of the half, and they took a 39-24 lead into the break.
But time was on the Trojans' side, and Muse connected on three of four free throws in the final half minute to put the game out of reach for good.
I think this was a great team win for us,” Troy head coach Michael Murphy said. I'm really pleased with how balanced our scoring was. I think we played great team defense, and did really well on the defensive boards. We need to finish more of our shots, though. We had some good looks, but we just weren't able to finish.”
The teams were fairly even offensively, with both squads connecting on 22 field-goal attempts. Troy finished 22-of-53 (41.5 percent), while Austin Peay finished 22-of-54 (40.7 percent) from the floor. From behind the arc, Troy finished 3-of-10 (30 percent), and the Lady Govs connected on four of their 17 tries (23.5 percent). The difference in the game came at the free-throw line, where the Trojans connected on 21 of 26 attempts (80.8 percent), and APSU finished 13-of-21 (61.9 percent).
The Trojans held a slight 37-33 rebounding advantage. Troy turned the ball over 24 times, compared to 23 by Austin Peay. Troy finished with 11 steals in the game, and Austin Peay collected six.
The Trojans return to action on Tuesday when they host in-state opponent Jacksonville State at 7 p.m.
