TROY, Ala. - The Troy University women's basketball team had four players score in double figures on the way to a season-high 79 points in a 79-65 Atlantic Sun win over Jacksonville at Trojan Arena on Saturday. The win ends an eight-game losing streak for the Trojans.
Sophomore Audrey Muse and Junior Alecia Jones each finished with double-doubles for Troy (3-10, 2-4 A-Sun), Muse with 10 points and 11 rebounds and Jones with 14 points and 15 rebounds. Sophomore Laura Lee Holman scored a season high 21 points, and freshman Amy Lewis finished with 17. Senior Kerri Fiehrer had six assists in the game.
The Trojans shot 26-of-61 (42.6 percent) from the floor, including 7-of-18 (38.9 percent) from three point range. Troy shot 20-of-27 (74.1 percent) from the free-throw line in the game.
Jacksonville (3-9, 0-5 A-Sun) shot 24-of-69 (34.8 percent) from the floor, including 4-of-14 (28.6 percent) from behind the arc. JU made 13-of-19 (68.4 percent) free-throw attempts.
The Trojans broke a 14-14 tie with a three by Holman with 12 minutes left in the first half. Troy never lost that lead, and went into halftime leading 41-31.
Jones led the Trojans with 14 points and 10 rebounds in the first half. Holman had nine first-half points, and Lewis scored eight in the first period. Muse had seven points and seven rebounds for Troy in the first half.
Alecia Jones' play in the first half really was the difference in the game,” said Troy head coach Michael Murphy. Between her strong play in the post and her ability to get offensive rebounds and the outside scoring of Laura Lee and Amy, we had a very balanced offense.”
The Trojans shot 13-of-34 (38.2 percent) in the first half, including 5-of-13 (38.5 percent) from three-point range. Troy connected on 10-of-12 (83.3 percent) of its first-half free-throw attempts.
Sheena Carpenter led Jacksonville with 10 first-half points. The Dolphins shot 12-of-23 (36.4 percent) from the floor, including 1-of-6 (16.7 percent) from behind the arc. Jacksonville was 6-of-9 (66.7 percent) from the free-throw line in the first period.
The Trojans never let up in the second period, shooting 13-of-27 (48.1 percent) from the floor, and leading by as many as 17 on the way to the win.
We played well and had a good night offensively. It's a good win that we'll build on as we continue in conference play,” said Murphy.
The Trojans head to North Carolina next week where they will play at Gardner-Webb on Thursday and at Campbell on Saturday.
