Trojan sophomore goalkeeper Laura Longard needed help to notch her third shutout of the season. In the eleventh minute Mercer's Catie Marshalek looked to put Mercer on the board first when she got past Longard and took a shot on the open net. Trojan defender Emily Cobb snuck in to knock the ball away just before it crossed the line to earn a save.
Troy then moved the ball down the field, and Karlie Bierie found Brittany Stoltz for a Trojan goal at the 10:59 mark. Stoltz scored once again in the thirty-sixth minute putting the Trojans up 2-0, which would be the halftime score.
In the second half, sophomore Vanessa Da Costa found Kate Hylsop ahead of the pack from midfield. Hyslop's shot got past Mercer's Lauren Burch to bring the score to 3-0.
The save by Emily really changed the game,” said Trojan head coach Diana Niland, who was coaching in her first Atlantic Sun game. If they score there, then we probably don't come back to score right away. The whole momentum changes. I'm really pleased with the way we came out and played and with the way the girls adjusted as the game went on. It's great to get that first conference win.”
The Trojans outshot the Bears 12-5. Longard tallied four saves in the match. Troy returns to action on Sunday, when they host A-Sun foe Georgia State at 1:30 p.m.
