TROY, Ala. - The Troy University soccer team managed just three shots in a 2-0 home loss to Samford on Tuesday, dropping TROY to 2-4-1 on the season.
The Trojans dodged a bullet early, when the Bulldogs' Rebecca Bohler hit the post on a shot in the fourth minute. Samford (1-4-0) took the lead in the ninth minute when TROY's Laura Longard deflected a shot by Heather Birdsell. Lindsay Shanks scored on the rebound to put Samford up 1-0, which would remain the score at the half. It was the first goal allowed by Longard in more than 142 minutes.
The Bulldog defense continued to stifle TROY in the second half, as the Trojans did not get off a shot in that period. Samford sealed the win with a goal by Jamie Stout at 85:27, with Allison Stone on the assist.
TROY had only three shots in the game while Samford had 13. Longard had four saves in the match.
We played a team that was more athletic than us today,” said Trojan head coach Diana Niland. We played better in the second half, but they hung on and put a late goal on us. We didn't establish enough possession to control the game. We didn't play bad, we just didn't play well enough.”
TROY's next match is Friday, Sept. 24, at 3 p.m. when it hosts Mercer in the Trojans' first conference match of the season.
