Trojans Win First Conference Game, Beat Mercer 64-50

Troy, Ala. - The Troy University women's basketball team opened the Atlantic Sun Conference season with a win, beating Mercer 64-50 at Trojan Arena on Thursday night. Four Trojans scored in double figures, led by freshman guard Amy Lewis, who finished with 21 points. Junior forward Alecia Jones notched her first double-double of the season, finishing with 13 points and 11 rebounds.
The Trojans (2-2, 1-0 A-Sun) held the Bears (2-3, 0-1 A-Sun) to just three points in the first eight minutes of play, taking an early 12-3 lead. The Trojans led by as many as 15 in the first half before going into the locker room with a 37-24 lead.
Lewis led the Trojans with 17 first-half points on 8-of-10 shooting. Troy shot 47.2 percent (17-of-36) from the floor in the first period, including a 1-of-5 (20 percent) effort from behind the three-point line.
The Troy defense held Mercer to 32 percent (8-of-25) shooting in the first half, and the Bears went 0-of-5 from behind the arc in the first 20 minutes. No Mercer player scored more than three points in the first period.
The Trojans maintained a double-digit lead through the second period, despite the offense cooling off. The Trojans shot just 8-of-25 (32 percent) from the floor in the second period. The defense, however, was able to hold Mercer to just 27.3 percent (9-of-33) shooting in the second period, including a 2-for-14 (14.3 percent) from behind the three-point line.
Along with Lewis and Jones, sophomores Audrey Muse and Valensia Hairston each scored in double figures, finishing with 13 and 12 points, respectively. Muse and Hairston each grabbed seven rebounds in the game. Senior point guard Kerri Fiehrer finished with six assists and no turnovers in the game.
The Trojans turned the ball over 16 times, compared to 21 turnovers for Mercer. Lewis led Troy with four steals.
The Trojans stay in conference play on Saturday when they play at Georgia State at 1 p.m.
