Clarksville, Tenn. - The Troy University women's basketball team will get its 2004-05 season underway when it plays at Austin Peay on Friday at 7 p.m.
The Trojans return three starters from last year's team that finished 11-17 and 10-10 in the A-Sun. Despite the returning experience, the Trojans are a young team, with seven first- and second-year players on the roster.
Included in that group are sophomores Laura Lee Holman and Audrey Muse. Last year Holman was named the A-Sun Freshman of the Year, and Muse was selected to the conference all-freshman team.
One position where the Trojans are not young is at point guard, where three-year starter Kerri Fiehrer returns for her senior season. Fiehrer was a second-team all-conference selection in 2004. She led the A-Sun in assists in both her sophomore and junior seasons, and she holds the Troy Division I record for career assists.
Also returning is junior forward Alecia Jones. The Dothan, Ala. averaged more than nine points per game and led the Trojans with 7.2 rebound per game last season.
Newcomers Amy Lewis and Rebecca Corbett each made an impact in the Trojans' exhibition game with Perik Jumper. Lewis led the Trojans with 15 points and six assists, while Corbett came off the bench to grab 10 rebounds for Troy. Sophomore Audrey Muse finished the game with a double-double, scoring 12 points to go with 10 rebounds.
Austin Peay is the defending two-time Ohio Valley Conference Champion. Four starters return from the team that went to the NCAA Tournament in 2004.
This is only the second meeting for the Trojans and Lady Govs. Austin Peay won the first meeting, held on Dec. 12, 1980.
