Charleston Southern (5-6-0) scored early, connecting on its first shot of the match. Katie Crona scored from the right side of the penalty box off a pass from Melissa Mantho in the eighth minute to put CSU up 1-0.
The Buccaneers struck again quickly when Natalie Jackson scored unassisted from 15-yards out at the 11:50 mark.
Troy had a few opportunities to work its way back, and they looked poised to score in the 22nd minute, when Brittany Stoltz, Vanessa Da Costa and Kate Hyslop each got off shots. CSU goalkeeper Miki Wilson notched saves on the shots by Stoltz and Hyslop, and Da Costa's shot sailed wide. In total, nine of Troy's 20 shots were on goal.
Troy also had missed opportunities in the second half. Melissa Rafac had a long shot hit the crossbar, and Stoltz had a shot hit the right post. In the 73rd minute, Erin Doud hit Stoltz with a pass from midfield. Stoltz got off a shot along the ground, but Wilson was there with a diving save to prevent the goal and preserve the shut out. It the seventh time the Trojans have been shut out this season.
We made some mistakes early, and we never got in a mindset to go out and play,” said Troy head coach Diana Niland.
CSU had 10 shots in the match, five on goal. Troy goalkeeper Laura Longard recorded three saves in the match.
The Trojans and Buccaneers kept the officials busy, with 20 fouls called throughout the match. Troy was whistled for 13 while seven were called on CSU.
Troy returns to A-Sun play on Friday when it hosts Stetson at 3 p.m.
