Troy University coach Jeff Jenkins begins his second season as head cross country coach and as the assistant track & field coach in charge of the distance and middle distance runners for the Trojans after a successful first season.
In Jenkins’ first season as head cross country coach at Troy, both the men’s and women’s cross country teams improved by two places from 2011 in the team Sun Belt Championships. Junior Enock Kirui was named to the All-Sun Belt team and freshman Julia Ostendorf missed all-conference honors by only two places. At the season’s end, all runners on the Troy University cross country team either beat their previous season best and/or set significant personal records and the Troy University women’s cross country team was one of two Alabama teams named to the USTFCCCA Academic All-American team.
In Jenkins’ first indoor and outdoor track & field seasons at the helm of the men’s and women’s middle-distance and distance runners, he coached athletes to seven Troy top-10 all-time marks including the number two mark in the women’s indoor 5,000m (Morgan Paulson). Jenkins has also coached one Troy athlete to All-Sun Belt honors in the men’s 800m run (Kemper Morton).
As the primary recruiter for the distance and middle-distance events, Jenkins has signed talent from south Florida to the coast of California as well as elite international runners. With the depth and talent added under Jenkins’ direction, Troy will likely see positive effects in the years to come.
Before joining the staff at Troy University, Jenkins was a coaching intern with the track & field program at Auburn University. While at Auburn, he assisted in aspects ranging from meet management to performance analysis. Jeff also brings a rich background of high school and club coaching where he has coached eight state champions, thirty-four school record holders, state championship MVPs, All-Region athletes and four Junior Olympic qualifiers. Coach Jenkins brings with him a background in exercise physiology seminars ranging from the US Olympic Committee International Altitude Training Symposium to the Nike Distance Summit as well as a Level II Endurance coaching certification from USA Track & Field.
Jenkins is an accomplished athlete in his own right. During his collegiate career at Huntingdon College, he achieved four all-conference selections, an all-freshman team selection, an individual conference title, and a Male Conference Runner of The Year award all in route to three team conference cross country championships.
Coach Jenkins holds a Bachelor’s degree in Coaching Education from Huntingdon College and is currently completing his Master’s degree in Sport and Fitness Management-Exercise Science from Troy University.
He attended Beauregard High School in Opelika, Alabama, and is the oldest of two siblings; one sister, and one brother, an accomplished junior distance runner himself.
