Senior earns second All-America honor for Trojans this season
EUGENE, Ore. - Troy University senior Lamontrey Stamper concluded his career with a 12th-place finish at the NCAA Championships in the long jump on Saturday, but will walk away as the second All-America this season for the Trojans as he finished among the top eight Americans in the field.
Stamper, competing in the second flight, finished seventh in his flight and 12th overall for the Trojans with a jump of 7.52 meters (24-08.25). Much like teammate, Leander McKenzie, Stamper finished higher than his ranking entering the competition on Saturday with all eyes on the competition as it was aired on CBS.
"These are the first two All-Americans for Troy in Division I," Troy University Director of Track and Field Jill Lancaster said. "It is unbelievable to get two in one year when we haven't any for so long. It is a testament to their dedication all year, being patient and working hard to accomplish greatness in their respective events."
Stamper battled his way through all season, and even his career to get to the national stage. In season's past, the senior was in the shadows of other jumpers and this past season he missed time due to personal reasons. However, he was able to battle back and get to the national stage, and end his career as one of the best jumpers in the country.
"We are very proud for Lamontrey," Lancaster said. "For a first time NCAA participant, he performed well and he handled the elite environment like a pro."
The environment, closing out Stamper's career, was the largest Saturday crowd recorded in the last 26 years at Historic Heyward Field as 12,812 witnessed the final day of competition. The four-day total was the largest recorded.
