John Schlarman returns for his sixth season as an assistant coach on the Troy University football staff, which he joined prior to the 2007 season. He has served as offensive line coach since arriving at Troy. Schlarman will also serve as Troy’s run game coordinator for the third season.
Schlarman has been a part of four Sun Belt Championship teams since his arrival at Troy. During his tenure with the Trojans the team has made three bowl appearances and has been one of the most exciting, dynamic and prolific offensive units in all of college football. In his five seasons, the Trojans have ranked in the top 30 in the nation in total offense four times, including a No. 3 national ranking in 2009.
In 2010, Scharlman was named the Run Game Coordinator - a new addition to the Trojans’ staff. The team averaged 156.6 yards per game, which was highlighted by DuJuan Harris going over the 100-yard mark in the R+L Carriers New Orleans Bowl on national television. The Trojans had a pair of runners go over 600 yards for the season, while a third was over 400 and a fourth over 300 for the season.
Schlarman has coached at least one first team all-conference selection in each of his four seasons. James Brown was selected in 2011, Tyler Clark earned a selection in 2010 and 2011, Tyler Clark and Danny Franks earned the honor in 2009, Chris Jamison in 2008 and Dion Small in both 2007 and 2008.
After finishing his career at Troy and being named all-conference, Brown signed a free agent deal with the Chicago Bears. Brown is the only former Troy offensive lineman that is currently in the NFL.
In 2010, Schlarman coached an all-conference selection as Clark earned his second nod in as many years earning First Team honors.
A native of Fort Thomas, Ky., Schlarman was a four-year starter on the offensive line at the University of Kentucky from 1994 until 1997. He was named to the Freshman All-SEC team in 1994 and was named the team’s most outstanding offensive lineman in 1995 and 1996. Following his junior season, he was chosen for the Unsung Hero All-America Team by the College Football Chronicle. As a senior in 1997, playing under Guy Morriss, he earned First Team All-SEC accolades.
Also an outstanding student, Schlarman was a three-year member of the SEC Academic Honor Roll, and was a finalist for Academic All-America in 1997 after earning a place on the GTE Academic All-District IV Team. He received a bachelor of arts degree in mathematics education in 1998, and received a master of science in kinesiology and Health Promotion in 2002 – both from the University of Kentucky.
Following his playing career at Kentucky, Schlarman coached at Bourbon County (Ky.) High School, where he coached the defensive line in 1998 and 1999, helping guide the team to the state playoffs both seasons. He returned to the University of Kentucky as an offensive graduate assistant in 2000, where he worked the Wildcats’ offensive line for two years and spent his third year working with the tight ends and serving as the walk-on coordinator.
Schlarman came to Troy after having spent four seasons as the head coach at Campbell County and Newport High Schools in Kentucky. His two-year record of 19-6 at Newport included a district title and a regional runner-up finish. He was also named the District Coach of the Year for his work in 2005.
Schlarman is married to the former Lee Anne Federspiel of Lexington, Kentucky. The couple has three sons, Joseph Douglas, Benjamin James and Matthew Thomas.
