John Schlarman returns for his third season as an assistant coach on the Troy University football staff. He joined the staff in 2007 and his main responsibility is the offensive line. He brings a wealth of experience in the Trojans wide-open offensive attack as both a coach and player.
Last season Schlarman was part of the staff that led the Trojans to a national ranking of 26 in total offense with 421.42 yards per game. He also led the Trojans rushing attack to a 36th-place national ranking, while the passing game came in at 32. The Trojans were the 23rd highest scoring team in the country in 2008, averaging 33.25 points per game. He also coached a pair of All-Sun Belt Conference performers at offensive tackle last season in Chris Jamison and Dion Small. That unit was third in the country in sacks given up, behind only two military option schools.
During the 2007 season, Schlarman coached an offensive line that yielded 10 less sacks than the previous year. That season, the offensive line paved the way for a unit that finished 16th in the country in total offense and 25th in scoring offense. Small made First-Team All-Sun Belt Conference at right tackle during the 2007 season.
Schlarman came to Troy after having spent four seasons as the head coach at Campbell County (KY) and Newport (KY) High Schools. His two-year record of 19-6 at Newport included a district title and a regional runner-up finish. He was also named the District Coach of the Year for his work in 2005. In two seasons at Campbell County, he took a program that had gone winless in the year before he arrived to an 8-12 record in two seasons.
A native of Fort Thomas, KY, Schlarman was a four-year starter on the offensive line at the University of Kentucky from 1994 until 1997. He was named to the Freshman All-SEC team in 1994 and was named the team’s most outstanding offensive lineman in 1995 and 1996. Following his junior season, he was chosen for the Unsung Hero All-America Team by the College Football Chronicle. As a senior in 1997, playing under Guy Morriss, he earned First Team All-SEC accolades.
Also an outstanding student, Schlarman was a three-year member of the SEC Academic Honor Roll, and was a finalist for Academic All-America in 1997 after earning a place on the GTE Academic All-District IV Team. He received a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Mathematics Education in 1998, and received a Master of Science in Kinesiology and Health Promotion in 2002 - both from the University of Kentucky.
Following his playing career at Kentucky, Schlarman coached at Bourbon County (KY) High School, where he coached the defensive line in 1998 and 1999, helping guide the team to the state playoffs both seasons. He returned to the University of Kentucky as an offensive graduate assistant in 2000, where he worked with former Troy offensive coordinator Tony Franklin. He worked with the Kentucky offensive line for two years and spent his third year working with the tight ends and serving as the walk-on coordinator.
He moved to Baylor in 2003, before coaching at Newport (KY) High School for two seasons prior to Troy.
Schlarman is married to the former Lee Anne Federspiel of Lexington, Kentucky. The couple has two sons, Joseph Douglas, born March 2, 2006, and Benjamin James born July 8, 2009.
