Chip Brundage begins his second season as the throws coach and recruiting coordinator for Troy University this fall.
Last season, Brundage coached then-junior Tiphanie Baker to the NCAA Outdoor National Championships in the throws. Baker set school records under Brundage in the discus, hammer and shot put under the guidance of Brundage.
During this past season at Troy, the throws - under the tutelage of Brundage - placed at the conference championships 12 times; won three individual event Sun Belt Conference championships; broke three Sun Belt Conference championship event records (indoor weight throw, discus and hammer); set five school records; recorded the eighth longest throw in the discus in the NCAA - Olympic "B" Standard; qualified four times for the NCAA Mideast Region; qualified for the USA Junior Championships; qualified for the NCAA National Championships; earned Sun Belt Conference Athlete of the Meet; and became the first woman to earn Academic Scholar-Athlete at the school.
Brundage comes to the Trojans from Drake University, where he served as an assistant coach for throws and as the recruiting coordinator. While at Drake, Brundage was responsible for all men's and women's track and field travel; team's administrative duties; meet management and event planning; all aspects of the throws program (weight room and technical); maintaining practice logs and phone logs; managing recruiting. Under Brundage, the Bulldogs had two throwers named All-Conference in the javelin (second in conference) and discus (sixth in conference). He assisted in signing 21 female and nine male student-athletes for the 2007-08 season.
Prior to his time as an assistant coach, Brundage stepped away from the world of track and field, when he served as an outside salesman at Infomax Office Systems before the opportunity arose to join Drake on a full-time basis. During that same time period, Brundage served as volunteer assistant coach from 2003 until 2005 at Drake in the throws and in multi-events (Heptathlon and Decathlon). He was responsible for all throwing events for both programs, as well as working with the multi-event athletes in training and their technique.
Brundage graduated from Simpson College (Indianola, IA) with a B.S. in Mathematics Education and Coaching in December 1999. He was named team captain during his junior and senior seasons, and was also selected as an All-American during his sophomore and junior seasons. Brundage was named as the Most Valuable Athlete on the team during his sophomore, junior and senior seasons. He still holds the school record in the discus, and he was named a First Team All-Conference selection in football during his junior season.
