Crane, who played baseball at the University of Alabama from 1990-93 and coached under Pierce at UAH from 1995-2000, begins his third season as the Trojan’s pitching coach.
Since joining the Troy coaching staff, Crane has helped guide Trojans closers to back-to-back All-Sun Belt Conference selections. In 2007, Josh Dew earned league Pitcher of the Year honors while setting a school record with 10 saves and leading all of college baseball with 13.4 strikeouts per nine innings. He was tabbed as an All-American and was selected by the St. Louis Cardinals in the 14th round of the MLB Draft.
In 2008, junior Josh Storm followed in Dew’s footsteps, breaking the one-year old school record for saves in a season with 12 while earned first team All-SBC honors. He posted a 2.09 ERA in 27 appearances and recorded 54 strikeouts in 38.2 innings of work.
Overall, the Troy pitching staff has averaged 8.1 strikeouts per nine innings over his two seasons while allowing just 3.9 walks per nine innings.
A native of Montgomery, Crane spent six years as Area Scouting Coordinator for the Anaheim Angels after leaving UAH. During that time he supervised scouting for the team in eight states across the east coast. He was personally responsible for signing 13 players during that time and contributed to the Angels’ minor league system being ranked as the best in baseball in 2004.
Following his playing career as a shortstop at Alabama, where he was named to the All-SEC Academic team in 1993, he received a Bachelor of Science degree with a double major in physical education and Spanish. He was named to the President’s List, Dean’s List and received the Chuck Kirkham Scholarship Award for Leadership in 1993.
He started his coaching career as a student assistant coach at Alabama and spent one summer as an assistant coach with the Harrisonburg Turks of the Shenandoah Valley Collegiate Summer League.
Crane spent part of the next year as a scout with the Pittsburgh Pirates before joining the UAH staff in 1995. While at UAH the Chargers posted a 160-61 record and had five All-Americans, seven All-Region picks and 20 All-Gulf South Conference players.
Crane, is married to the former Shannon Crisp of Dublin, Ga. The couple has one child, Jackson Bryant, born on June 6, 2008.
