OMAHA, Neb. - Troy's historic 2026 season came to a close with a 12-0 loss to No. 16 national seed West Virginia in Tuesday's College World Series elimination game.
Troy's unforgettable postseason run concluded with a 7-3 record in the NCAA Tournament. After dropping its regional opener, the Trojans rattled off four consecutive wins to capture the Gainesville Regional, swept Little Rock in the first-ever Troy Super Regional, and went 1-2 in Omaha, highlighted by the program's first-ever College World Series victory over Ole Miss on Sunday.
In Tuesday's loss to West Virginia, Mountaineer starter Dawson Montesa held the Trojans to two hits in 5.1 innings, striking out six and walking four. WVU used three different arms out of the bullpen, limiting Troy to two hits while walking three.
Troy starter Cooper Ellingworth went three innings, striking out four, while allowing two runs on four hits and three walks. Ellingworth struck out Matthew Graveline looking to strand two runners in scoring position in the first before navigating more traffic in the second, but the Mountaineers scored a pair of two-out runs in the third.
The Trojan righty responded to a leadoff single by Gavin Kelly with a groundout and a strikeout, but a Graveline RBI double, a walk, a hit-batter and a wild pitch put two on the board for WVU.
Dylan Alonso followed Ellingworth in relief, going 2.2 innings with two hits, four runs, three walks and five punchouts. The junior righty cruised through his first eight outs - allowing just one walk - before a pair of two-out walks led to a three-run blast by Kelly.
Matt Dill relieved Alonso after an infield single by Paul Schoenfeld, and he came around to score after a wild pitch and a single through the right side by Sean Smith to put WVU up 6-0.
The Mountaineers scored six runs late, adding one in the seventh and five in the ninth as Troy used three more arms out of the bullpen. West Virginia out-hit Troy 14-4 in the ballgame.
