TROY, Ala. - Troy dropped both games of its Saturday doubleheader with App State, falling 13-7 in game one and 5-0 in game two.

The Trojans (22-25, 12-11 SBC) got strong starts from Benjamin Stubbs and Tommy Egan, but the Mountaineers (28-17, 15-8 SBC) put up crooked numbers in the seventh inning of both contests to seal the doubleheader sweep.

The Trojans entered the seventh inning of game one with a 5-2 lead before an 11-spot from the App State offense flipped the momentum. Stubbs' day ended without recording an out in the frame after an error, a walk, a fielder's choice with all runners safe and a two-run Steven Smith single. The Mountaineers recorded eight of their 15 hits in the inning as the Trojans used three different relievers - Cooper Ellingworth, Blake Dean and Noah Thigpen - to get out of the frame.

App State starter Nick DiRito allowed five runs in his four innings of work. The Trojans scored two in the first as Blake Cavill and Josh Pyne executed a first and third double steal before an RBI double by Jimmy Janicki. In the third, Pyne and Cavill hit back-to-back solo homers while Sean Darnell added an RBI single. Troy tacked on two late runs on a Drew Nelson double in the seventh and a solo homer by Janicki in the ninth, his 14th long ball of the season.

In game two, Egan tossed five scoreless frames before issuing one unearned run in the sixth, finishing his night with seven strikeouts. Zach Crotchfelt relieved Egan with one out in the seventh after a walk and a hit batter, and the first batter he faced, Riley Tuft, homered over the right field wall. Crotchfelt issued an unearned run in the eighth, after an error to start the inning led to an RBI single for Jalen Seward.

For App State, righty Gage Peterson held Troy to three hits in seven scoreless innings, striking out six with one walk. Right-hander Max Tramontana kept the Trojans out of the hit column in the final two innings, allowing one walk with one strikeout.

Notables

In game two, Troy was shut out in a home game for the first time since February 23, 2020 against Louisiana Tech.
Aaron Piasecki recorded a hit in both games, extending his hitting streak to five games. He's hitting .400 with two doubles, one homer and five RBIs during that stretch.
Josh Pyne's homer in the third inning of game one was his fifth of the season. It traveled 384 feet with an exit velocity of 98 MPH.
Blake Cavill's homer in the third inning of game one was his seventh of the season. It traveled 369 feet with an exit velocity of 104 MPH.
Pyne and Cavill's back-to-back homers marked the fourth time Troy has hit back-to-back home runs this season.
Jimmy Janicki extended his hitting streak to a career-high 13 games. He's hitting .439 with seven doubles, six homers and 22 RBIs during that stretch.
Janicki's two RBIs give him a Sun Belt-leading 61 RBIs on the season.
Janicki's homer in the ninth inning of game one was his 14th of the season. It traveled 370 feet with an exit velocity of 98 MPH.

If you're having good starts, you're in position, but just not good enough in the seventh and beyond. Crotch has been so good for us, so I hate it for him."

Troy and App State will conclude the series at 1 p.m. on Sunday. Lefty Hayden Smith, the reigning Sun Belt and National Pitcher of the Week, will start for the Trojans, while the Mountaineers will turn to left-hander Tanner Nolan.
