TROY, Ala. - Troy's bats didn't miss a beat after a three-day break, closing its five-game homestand with a 12-2 win over Florida A&M in seven innings at Riddle-Pace Field.Â
The Trojans (16-17) tallied nine hits and drew 15 free passes on 12 walks and three HBPs against a Florida A&M (15-15) pitching staff that used seven different arms. Troy threw the first punch with four runs in the first before putting up a five-spot in the fourth. The Trojans then scored two in the sixth before a bases-loaded walk by Steven Meier in the seventh sealed the run-rule victory.
For the Trojans, catcher Jimmy Janicki doubled twice and totaled three RBIs while starting pitcher Drew Nelson, who struck out three in three perfect innings, went 1-for-4 with three RBIs at the plate. Meier walked twice and had three RBIs while Blake Cavill was on base four times, drawing three walks and an HBP, scoring three runs.Â
The Trojans used five pitchers behind Nelson, starting with Blake Dean, who earned the win and struck out two in a hitless fourth inning. Hayden Smith kept FAMU off the board in the fifth, allowing one hit and one HBP while striking out one.Â
Chase Cartron exited with an injury after walking a hitter in the sixth, before Brady Richardson went 1.1 innings with two hits, one walk and one earned run while his inherited runner also scored. Nate Criswell picked up the final two outs for the Trojans, allowing just one hit.
NotablesÂ
Head Coach Skylar Meade
"I thought we did what we needed to do. We're going to play to win every inning. We will never apologize for doing that. We were going to play hard, take what the game gives us, and when it gives us stuff, we're going to take it. I think the guys came out ready. Drew Nelson set the tone, just being a strikezone assaulter."
Catcher Jimmy Janicki
"Everybody did a great job setting the tone. Four runs in the first. Great job all around.Â
Starting Pitcher/Designated Hitter Drew Nelson
"Any time you can help the team win you feel good about yourself, so it was good to do."
