TROY, Ala. – The Troy softball team fell 4-2 in a 10-inning marathon to ULM on Friday night. The Trojans (30-18, 8-11 SBC) took an early 2-0 lead but ultimately fell to the Warhawks (33-18, 15-4 SBC) as ULM scored two in the 10th inning.
Makaley Boswell accounted for one of Troy's two RBIs, punching a single through the infield in the second inning. Mia Tidmore drove Troy's other run in with a first-inning double. Kiley Huffman and Dailynn Motes recorded two-hit games against the Warhawks.
The Troy pitching staff gave up just three earned runs over 10 innings, as Esmee Ames, Abby Lovell and Ella Cunningham held the ULM offense in check for much of the game. Ames fired three scoreless innings to start it off.
Ames struck out one to start the game scoreless, and the Troy offense went to work in the bottom half. With two outs, Huffman poked a single up the middle before Tidmore brought her home with a ringing double into the left-center field gap.
Following another scoreless inning from Ames, the Trojans extended the lead to 2-0 in the second. Motes and Presley Ivey singled to start the inning before Boswell drove the run in with a bouncing single through the left side.
A double play from Motes in the third helped Ames out of the third inning. In the fourth, Abby Lovell entered in relief of Ames, striking out one in a scoreless inning. ULM tied the game up at 2-2 in the fifth inning, scoring off a single and a Troy error.
Lovell spun a scoreless sixth to keep it knotted up. Despite a pinch-hit walk from Mya Holt in the bottom of the sixth, the game remained tied. Cunningham entered to pitch in the seventh, holding ULM scoreless.
Ivey walked in the seventh inning, but the Trojans couldn't walk it off. Cunningham went back out to pitch in extra innings, working around a double to keep it 2-2. She went back out for the ninth inning as well – ULM hit a two-out triple, but Cunningham ended the inning with a strikeout.
Although the Trojans got two hits in the ninth, ULM got out of it. The Warhawks scored two in the 10th to take a 4-2 lead. In the bottom half, Megan Loftis and Huffman hit singles, but it wasn't enough to punch back and tie it.
Quotable: Head Coach Eric Newell
"It was a tough one for us tonight for sure, I thought our girls battled really well. We had the lead early and couldn't hang on. Anytime you lose in extra innings it burns, especially at home when you have the last at-bat. It wasn't down to one play or one call, it was a collection of things and ULM executed and adapted just a little bit better than we did. They had the clutch hit when they needed it, and that's just a bat-and-ball sport. It hurts, but we're going to wash it and show up tomorrow and play some good softball."
