TROY, Ala. – ULM, which is tied for first place in the Sun Belt Conference, took game two of the series from the Troy softball team 6-2 on Saturday afternoon. The Trojans (30-19, 8-12 SBC) couldn't overcome a four-run second inning from the Warhawks (34-18, 16-4 SBC).
The Troy bullpen held ULM to just one run after the second inning – Esmee Ames spun 2.1 scoreless innings, while Savannah Money allowed one run across 3.1 innings while striking out two.
At the dish, Mia Tidmore continued to rake after hitting an RBI double last night. She went 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored, hitting yet another RBI double and scoring on a wild pitch.
After scoring one to get things going in the first inning, the Warhawks loaded the bases in the second, and cleared them on a three-RBI triple from Brooklin Lippert. ULM made it 5-0 after she scored on a passed ball.
Although the Trojans had a few baserunners in the middle innings off a Tidmore single and a walk from Presley Ivey – her 24th of the season – Troy didn't get on the board until the fourth. Kiley Huffman led off the bottom of the fourth with a single and then scored off Tidmore's double, and the wild pitch brought Tidmore home to cut the deficit to 5-2.
ULM scored its sixth run of the game in the top of the fifth to widen the lead to 6-2. In the bottom of the fifth, Makaley Boswell sent a two-out triple deep to the right-center gap to extend her hit streak to 15 games.
In the seventh, Troy brought the tying run to the plate as Lydia Kirby doubled, followed by an Ivey single. Boswell got plunked to load the bases, but Troy couldn't rally to tie it late.
Quotable: Head Coach Eric Newell
"The slow start kind of doomed us today, falling behind such a good team. I don't want to toot their horn too much, but that is a quality team and they're tied for the lead in the conference for a reason. They have good pitching, good hitting and all the things, but I believe in our team and I believe we can come back tomorrow and win to salvage this series. We just couldn't overcome the early runs they scored."
