3/7/2026 7:30:00 PM | Softball
FORT MYERS, Fla. – The Troy softball team shut out Florida Gulf Coast 7-0 to start the day before dropping a close 3-2 contest in the second game of a doubleheader. The Trojans (14-7) earned their sixth shutout of the season against the Eagles (6-16) in game one.
Freshman Presley Ivey raked on the day, becoming the first Trojan to hit three doubles in a game since Kelly Horne did on Feb. 18, 2022, against Nicholls. On the day, Ivey went 4-for-7 with a walk and two RBIs from the leadoff spot.
Ella Cunningham (3-0) scattered two hits across five innings in game one, combining with Savannah Money to get the shutout. The duo struck out seven Eagles in the matinee. Money pitched in relief in game two as well, finishing the day with 3.1 hitless innings and four strikeouts.

Two first-inning runs were all the Trojans would need in a 7-0 win over Florida Gulf Coast to start the day. A five-run third inning and five scoreless innings from Ella Cunningham pushed Troy to the win.
Presley Ivey crushed at the dish, hitting three doubles in her first three at-bats and pushing across two runs in the process. She became the first Trojan to hit three doubles in a game since 2022.
Also having a strong outing at the dish was Dailynn Motes, who collected two RBIs in the first inning with a double.
The Trojans got a quick start, as Ivey led off the game with a double ahead of walks from Makaley Boswell and Kiley Huffman. With one out, Motes scored two with a double over the right fielder's head to give Troy a 2-0 lead.
Ella Cunningham took the circle to hold the Eagles scoreless for the first three innings, striking out two in the first three frames. In the third, McKinnon Howard made back-to-back rangy catches in left field to keep FGCU off the board.
Despite another double from Ivey in the second inning, the Troy offense didn't get on the board again until the fourth inning.
A walk got it started for the Trojans before Howard roped a single to the third baseman to score another run. Ivey dropped her third double in three at-bats into left-center field to make it 5-0.
A wild pitch scored one more for the Trojans, and Cunningham helped her own cause with a screaming double down the left field line. She carried the 7-0 lead into the circle in the fourth inning, stranding a runner to keep the Eagles scoreless.
In the fifth inning, Cunningham struck out two more batters to bring her total to four strikeouts. The game entered a lightning delay in the bottom of the sixth with Troy still holding a 7-0 lead.
Savannah Money stepped into the circle after the delay and dispatched two Eagles via the strikeout. Although the Trojans couldn't add on in the seventh, Money closed it out in the seventh to seal the win.
TROY 2, FGCU 3
Florida Gulf Coast took down Troy 3-2 in the second game of the day, using a three-run fourth inning to take the victory.
Makaley Boswell continued a 21-game on-base streak for the Trojans, going 2-for-3 with an RBI triple in the contest. Presley Ivey collected a hit and a walk to continue her stellar day, and Kiley Huffman hit a sacrifice fly and a single to account for Troy's second RBI.
Ivey got another leadoff hit to start game two, punching a single down the left field line. A throw home on a fielder's choice helped FGCU out of the inning and ended the danger.
Lovell worked around a leadoff double, striking out two in the bottom of the first to leave runners on the corners. Although a Sophia Jenkins hit couldn't get Troy on the board in the second, Lovell stranded another runner in the second.
After Ivey got on base with a leadoff walk in the third, Boswell brought her home with a huge RBI triple to give Troy the lead. Huffman promptly made it 2-0 Trojans with a sacrifice fly to score another run.
To open the bottom of the third inning, Megan Loftis pulled back a would-be Eagles home run. Lovell got two groundouts following the highlight-reel play to end the frame.
In the fourth, Loftis and Jenkins each worked long at-bats and drew walks to put the pressure on again. McKinnon Howard bounced an infield single to second base to load the bases for the Trojans. However, FGCU forced back-to-back pop ups to get out of the inning.
A leadoff triple for the Eagles turned into a run, with an infield single allowing them to cut the Troy lead to 2-1. FGCU tied it with another infield single and added another run with an RBI groundout to take a 3-2 lead.
The Trojans went down in order in the fifth, and Florida Gulf Coast knocked Lovell out of the game. Savannah Money entered the game for her second appearance of the day with runners on the corners. She forced the quick groundout to get out of the inning.
Troy went down one-two-three in the sixth, but Money came back with a one-two-three inning of her own. The Trojans recorded back-to-back singles from Boswell and Huffman to threaten with two outs in the seventh inning. However, a groundout ended it.
Quotable: Head Coach Eric Newell
"It was a little bit disappointing to get the split today. We played well in game one and came back, and kind of fell flat in game two. It's nice that hopefully we can learn from these mistakes and learn from not being able to come through and get a sweep today. We can come back tomorrow and still win the series, which ultimately is what we want to get used to as we go into conference play."
