Softball Takes Down Georgia Tech in Atlanta
3/3/2026 6:56:00 PM | Softball
ATLANTA – The Troy softball team rode a six-run third inning to a 6-2 win over Georgia Tech. It was Troy's (13-6) second win over a Power Four opponent under head coach Eric Newell and first since Feb. 22, 2025, against Wisconsin.
Kiley Huffman led the team with two RBIs, going 1-for-4 with a double in the contest. Makaley Boswell went 2-for-4, crushing an RBI double and reaching on a bunt single in the seventh.
Troy's pitching staff combined to hold the Yellow Jackets (15-8) in check. Ella Cunningham started with three innings of one-run ball before Mya Holt fired 1.2 innings of her own. In a clutch situation late, Abby Lovell entered the game and worked 2.1 innings with three strikeouts to ice the game.
After a quiet first inning offensively, Cunningham started the game in the circle for the Trojans and stranded two runners with a strikeout. A Kalee Rochinski walk didn't amount to anything for Troy in the second inning.
In the bottom of the second, the Yellow Jackets added one on a bases-loaded hit-by-pitch. However, the offense got rolling in the third for Troy.
Sophia Jenkins started the explosive inning with a leadoff double down the left field line. McKinnon Howard dropped a beautiful bunt to force a Georgia Tech error, scoring Jenkins and Presley Ivey to make it 2-0.
Following the error, Boswell drilled a double to left-center field to score Howard. The Trojans knocked Georgia Tech's starter out of the game but kept it rolling anyway. Troy loaded the bases, and Huffman promptly fixed that with a two-RBI double to right-center field to make it 5-1.
Finishing off the six-run inning, Megan Loftis poked a triple into the gap, widening the lead to 6-1 Trojans. Cunningham quickly kept the momentum on Troy's side, getting a double play and a strikeout to end the third inning.
Holt entered the game in relief of Cunningham in the fourth and worked a scoreless inning to hold the score. In the fifth, the Yellow Jackets hit a triple and scored on a groundout to cut the Troy lead to 6-2.
Lovell entered the game with two runners on and two outs in the fifth inning. She forced the groundout to first base to hold the score where it was. The Trojans' offense was unable to get any insurance, and Lovell went back out to the circle for the sixth.
The Trojans loaded the bases in the seventh with an Ivey walk and singles from Howard and Boswell. However, Georgia Tech escaped the inning without surrendering a run, thanks in part to a diving snag in right field to rob Huffman of another hit.
Lovell struck out the side in order to end the game and hand Troy the win.
Quotable: Head Coach Eric Newell
"Good win tonight against a quality opponent in Georgia Tech. Our girls wanted this pretty bad. It was a disappointing weekend, but to come back and play well on Tuesday night against Georgia Tech in Atlanta is a good night for us. It's also something we expect, and we're going to keep raising that standard."
