AUBURN, Ala. – The Troy softball team dropped an 8-0 contest to No. 11 Virginia Tech on Saturday morning. The Trojans (12-6) were shut out for the first time this season against the Hokies (14-2), getting thrown out at home to end the game.
Makaley Boswell had one of Troy's hits on the day, shooting a double into left-center field in the fourth inning. Presley Ivey poked a single into shallow left field in the fifth inning, taking a walk as well.
Virginia Tech struck in the first inning, scoring first off a wild pitch and then on a two-run homer to take a 3-0 lead. However, Mya Holt put up a zero in the second after Dailynn Motes leaped up for an incredible catch to help her go one-two-three.
The Hokies scored another in the third to make it 4-0 and hit a two-run shot with two outs in the fourth to widen the lead to 6-0.
In the bottom of the fourth, the Trojans got their first hit of the game as Makaley Boswell rocketed a double into the left-center field gap. Ella Cunningham took a walk to put the pressure on, but the Trojans couldn't push the run across.
Virginia Tech put together a two-out rally in the fifth to push the contest into run-rule territory. A walk got Troy's offense going in the fifth, and Ivey's single brought pinch-runner Jasmine Lawrence around third. She was thrown out to end the game.
Quotable: Head Coach Eric Newell
"It was a disappointing day against a really good Virginia Tech team. They can really swing it and they're a lot to handle for sure. Anytime we get beat, it's going to be a little disappointing, but at times we competed pretty well. We're going to keep battling and keep preparing."
