MOBILE, Ala. – Troy men's basketball received a 26-point performance from Cooper Campbell but struggled offensively as a whole in a 65–54 loss to South Alabama on Saturday afternoon.
Troy (18–11, 10–6) shot just 24.5 percent (13-of-53) from the field - its lowest output of the season. South Alabama's zone defense forced the Trojans to settle for outside shots, as Troy attempted 42 3-pointers and converted just 10 (23.8 percent).
Campbell provided a spark for the Trojans, knocking down a career-high seven 3-pointers. The sophomore finished 8-of-19 from the field and 7-of-17 from beyond the arc.
South Alabama (20–9, 10–6) placed four players in double figures, led by 17 points apiece from Jayden Cooper and Chaze Harris.
Jerrell Bellamy opened the scoring with two free throws on Troy's first possession.
South Alabama led 10–5 at the first media timeout following a stretch of more than three minutes without a Troy field goal.
Thomas Dowd ended the drought with a step-back 3-pointer to give Troy its second lead of the game at 11–10.
Hanz Louis Jeune connected on his second 3-pointer of the day at the 4:44 mark, and another triple shortly after pushed South Alabama's lead to 31–20 - its largest of the first half.
Campbell caught fire late in the opening 20 minutes, knocking down three 3-pointers in under three minutes to keep Troy within striking distance. The Jaguars carried a 33–26 lead into the locker room.
Troy used an 8–0 run early in the second half to trim the deficit to 36–34.
The teams traded baskets over the next several possessions, with Campbell continuing to lead the charge. He hit 3-pointers on back-to-back trips, pulling Troy within one with 10:47 remaining.
However, the Trojans went cold again, enduring a stretch of more than three minutes without a field goal and shooting 2-of-13 over an extended span.
Campbell ended the drought with a steal and score while drawing a foul. His free throw tied the game at 49 with 7:09 to play.
South Alabama responded as Troy's shooting struggles continued. Adam Olsen knocked down a 3-pointer with just under four minutes remaining to extend the Jaguars' lead to six.
The Trojans did not make another field goal the rest of the way, scoring their final five points from the free-throw line.
Olsen sealed the game with a layup with 55 seconds remaining, pushing the lead to nine as South Alabama secured the 65–54 victory.
Quotable – Head Coach Scott Cross
"[South Alabama] played a great game. We did not shoot the ball very well. It's hard to win when you shoot 25% from the field. Obviously they make you take 3-point shots, they do a great job of packing everything into the paint. We just couldn't see the ball go in enough. I love our basketball team and I'm thankful to the good Lord to get to coach this team. The good thing is we still control our own destiny."
