Tommy Egan set the tone for the Trojans on the mound, racking up a career high nine strikeouts across five scoreless innings while allowing one hit in his second start in the cardinal & white. The UIC transfer was perfect through his first three frames, which included for a 33-minute break for a rain delay after the second inning.
Campbell starter Lleyton Grubich didn't return after the rain delay, having tossed two scoreless innings, and the Trojans took advantage by pouncing on the Camel bullpen. Righty Camden Wimbish took the loss, allowing six runs in four innings of relief.
Catcher Jimmy Janicki had his first of four RBIs with an RBI single in the fifth, and second baseman Sean Darnell knocked him in on a double down the right field line. In the sixth, Jabe Boroff added another Trojan run on a sacrifice fly.
Cooper Ellingworth pitched 1.1 innings of relief for the Trojans with an earned run and a strikeout, while Dylan Alonso surrendered two unearned runs with three strikeouts in 1.2 innings.
Janicki continued his offensive firepower with a 433-foot birthday bomb, scoring Aaron Piasecki after a leadoff double to begin the Trojans' four-run eighth inning. Left fielder Drew Nelson later knocked in two runs on a hard-hit single that bounced off the pitcher and into right field.
The Trojans secured the run-rule with a six-run eighth, batting around in the inning. Aaron Piasecki led off the inning with his second double of the night, and ended the ballgame with a two-run single up the middle, his career-high fourth hit of the game. Troy also added runs on a Jimmy Janicki double before he scored on a wild pitch, a Steven Meier RBI triple and a Nelson RBI single.

Head Coach Skylar Meade
"It's a tight game. It's 3-1 [After 6]. It's a Friday night ballgame. Just because it ended up separated, that wasn't the reality of the game. You look at the DNA of games - everyone leaves here and says that was easy - but there was nothing easy. Campbell's very good. They're incredibly well-coached, as we obviously already know. It got separated out - what was great was we found a way to finish it there in the eighth, didn't use any other arms, because that can be pivotal over the course of the weekend and obviously the year."
Shortstop Aaron Piasecki
"We've got eight other dudes in our lineup that are going to produce every day, so I feel very comfortable hitting at the top because we've got a bunch of dudes behind me that can do the job."
Next Up
Game two between Troy and Campbell is scheduled for 3:33 p.m. at Riddle-Pace Field. Sophomore right-hander Noah Thigpen will start for the Trojans, while righty Connor Hensley will take the mound for the Camels.
