TROY, Ala. – Two on. One-run deficit in the ninth inning. Pinch hitter. No problem for Kalee Rochinski.
The UTSA transfer scorched a two-RBI double into the gap and secured a 2-1 win for the Trojans (8-1) over Radford. Troy took down the Highlanders (2-2) after run-ruling IU Indy (3-6) 8-0 to start the day.
Dominant pitching performances fueled the Trojans, as Savannah Money and Ella Cunningham combined for a shutout in game one and Abby Lovell and Emma Banks held the Highlanders to just one run in the nightcap. Troy played errorless defense across both games and turned three double plays.
On the offensive side, Sophia Jenkins finished the day 4-for-6 with two home runs against the Jaguars. Cunningham ran her RBI streak to eight games – the first Trojan to have eight straight games with an RBI since Michelle Phelps in 2015 – before failing to drive one in against Radford despite collecting a hit.
TROY 8, IU Indy 0
The Trojans kicked off Valentine's Day with an 8-0 run-rule win over IU Indy, their fourth straight run-rule win. Savannah Money (2-0) spun a gem over five innings, striking out two and scattering two hits.
From the dish, Sophia Jenkins and Ella Cunningham shined. Jenkins crushed two home runs, going 3-for-3 with three RBIs. Cunningham kept her RBI streak going, finishing the contest 2-for-3 with an RBI and two doubles. Additionally, Presley Ivey went 2-for-3 from the leadoff spot, earning her first collegiate multi-hit game.
To start the game, Money worked around a walk in the first inning. Ivey drew a leadoff walk and stole second base, and Makaley Boswell reached on an error. The duo performed a double steal to put runners on second and third with nobody out.
Huffman put the first run on the board with an RBI groundout, and Cunningham made it 2-0 with a booming double to right field. She logged an RBI for the eighth straight game, becoming the first Trojan since Michelle Phelps in 2015 to do so.
After another quick inning from Money, the Trojans went back to work. Jenkins unloaded on a ball for her second homer of the season, and back-to-back singles from Megan Loftis and Presley Ivey put runners on second and third with none out.
Huffman quickly made it 4-0 with a sacrifice fly, and a nice defensive play by the Jaguars infield prevented Cunningham from getting another RBI hit. Although IU Indy led off the third with a single, the Jaguars lined into a double play to end the frame.
A walk by Kalee Rochinski and a single from Jenkins helped Troy threaten again, but the Jaguars were able to get out of the third inning still behind 4-0. Money punched out two batters in the fourth to hang another zero.
While Troy couldn't extend the lead in the fourth, Money kept rolling with another scoreless frame in the fifth.
Cunningham hit another double to start the fifth inning for the Trojans. With two outs, Rochinski drove in the run after searing a single through the left side. Jenkins struck yet again, launching a ball to left-center field to make it 7-0 Trojans.
In the sixth inning, Cunningham stepped into the circle to pitch and punched out two in a clean frame. The Trojans got going in the bottom of the frame with an Ivey leadoff double. Boswell singled and stole second, and Huffman walked it off with a fielder's choice.
TROY 2, Radford 1
Radford was up 1-0 in the ninth inning of a fierce pitcher's duel until Kalee Rochinski stepped into the box. The catcher's pinch-hit, two-RBI double into the gap walked it off for the Trojans in a 2-1 win.
The Highlanders took the lead in the top of the inning with a wild pitch, setting up the bottom half of Troy's order. Amity White took a gutsy seven-pitch walk with Dailynn Motes on second as the extra-inning runner. Sophia Jenkins dropped a sacrifice bunt to move both runners over, setting up Rochinksi to tee off on the first pitch she saw and win it.
The Troy pitching staff starred in the game – freshman Abby Lovell twirled seven innings of scoreless ball, scattering eight hits and striking out one. Emma Banks (1-0) came on in relief and allowed just two hits in two innings of work.
Although the Highlanders led off the game with an infield single, Lovell stranded the runner with a strikeout in the first. Radford worked around a Makaley Boswell single and steal in the bottom of the inning.
Troy held Radford scoreless again in the second, as Lovell got out of the inning thanks in part to a spectacular diving play by Dailynn Motes at short. The Trojans were unable to get anything going in the bottom half, but Lovell hung another zero.
Despite a Megan Loftis single and stolen base, the Trojans couldn't get on the board in the third. While Troy ran into trouble in the top of the fourth, the game remained scoreless after Presley Ivey turned an inning-ending double play.
Two strong plays in the outfield from Loftis and Kiley Huffman kept Radford off the board in the fifth inning. Sophia Jenkins led off the fifth with a bloop single, and Loftis sacrificed to move pinch-runner Jasmine Lawrence to second. Ivey drew a walk to put pressure on Radford reliever Dakota Redmon, but she got out of the inning.
Another Troy double play helped Lovell work a sixth straight scoreless inning. Ella Cunningham extended her hit streak to nine games with an infield single to lead off the bottom of the sixth. Two strikeouts helped Radford escape the inning yet again.
Lovell worked around a single in the seventh to post another zero, sending it to the bottom of the seventh. Troy couldn't scrape across a run, and the game went to extras with Banks stepping into the circle.
Banks worked a scoreless inning before Redmon spun one of her own in the eighth. The Highlanders took a 1-0 lead with a wild pitch in the ninth inning, but the walk-off won it for Troy.
Quotable: Head Coach Eric Newell
"It was a great night here at the Troy Softball Complex for sure with the walk-off win here in extra innings. We took care of business in run-rule fashion earlier. It was good for us today to win a close ballgame. The girls really grew up today and saw a lot of the fight we're going to see in conference play."
