TROY, Ala. - A record 3,892 fans packed Riddle-Pace Field on Tuesday night as No. 14 Troy battled against No. 18 Alabama in a 10-2 loss.Â
Alabama out-hit Troy 14-8, scoring four runs in the first against Trojan starter Jacob Roettgen and three against righty Adam Falinski in the second. Shortstop Justin Lebron homered for the Tide in the first while left fielder Kade Snell hit a three-run homer in the third.
Falinski settled in, allowing just one run over the next four innings. The righty matched his season high of 5.0 innings pitched with five strikeouts, which was one shy of his season-high six punchouts in Troy's win at Mississippi State on February 25.Â
The Crimson Tide countered with a strong performance on the mound, getting three shutout innings with two hits and a pair of strikeouts from JT Blackwood to start. Righty Aeden Finateri earned the win, pitching 2.2 innings of one-run ball and holding the Trojans to two hits while allowing an RBI single to Steven Meier after a Sean Darnell double in the sixth.Â
Troy lefty Brock Tapper pitched the final 3.0 innings for the Trojans, striking out three while allowing four hits, two runs and one earned run. The Trojans scraped across another run in the ninth against Alabama reliever Coulson Buchanan on Meier's second RBI single of the game.Â
Troy moves to 34-15 on the season, and are back in action on Wednesday at Samford. First pitch at Joe Lee Griffin Field in Birmingham, Ala., is scheduled for 6 p.m.
Quick Hitters
QuotablesÂ
Head coach Skylar Meade on the pitching…Â
"If you sat there and said 'hey, we have eight K's and two walks' before the game, you'd sign up for that. We got in some porous counts in the first inning. That's just the reality. 2-0's and 3-1's. We got, got in that first. We go to Falinski, back-to-back HBPs and then the best bat-to-ball guy in the SEC [Snell] is going to get you. I commend Adam for what he did. Him and Tapper really protected us for tomorrow, going five and three innings respectively. That's going to prove pivotal."
Meade on the crowd at Riddle-Pace Field…
"It was great. It's what we hope to see all the time. You look at what we're capable of doing. I was really proud of Troy."
