TROY, Ala. – The 56-game regular season for Troy softball reached its conclusion with a 2-1 series win over South Alabama to enter the Sun Belt Conference Tournament as the No. 8 seed, awaiting its first-round matchup against James Madison on Wednesday, May 7 at 7 p.m. All games will be hosted by Troy softball, with the nine-game slate scheduled in the Troy Softball Complex.
"We are honored and grateful to bring the Sun Belt Softball Tournament to Troy," head coach Eric Newell said. "We look forward to showing off our beautiful town, campus and softball facility. As for our team, specifically, we are excited to play in the tournament at the Troy Softball Complex, where we have had great success this season. We enter as the eighth seed against a hot JMU team, but we have really been swinging it well and know how tightly contested the conference has been this season. This really feels like a year anyone can win it, so why not Troy."
Sun Belt softball was a tight race with third and 11th place outside the tournament, separated by four games. Troy, under Newell in his third season, finished league play at 12-12 with a 33-23 overall record – Newell reached his 100th win at Troy in the regular season finale.
The Trojans enter the four-day schedule leading the league in sac flies with 20, ranking 26th in the country. Troy also sits second in batting average (.311), doubles (73), hits (433), runs per game (5.87), shutouts (10), stolen bases per game (1.43), runs (317) and stolen bases (77). Also, Taylor McKinney claimed her 200th hit over the weekend, leading the Sun Belt Conference in runs with 54.
