TROY, Ala. - Troy senior right-handed pitcher Grayson Stewart was named to the Sun Belt All-Tournament Team following the conclusion of the Sun Belt Conference Championship on Sunday.
Stewart put together a dominant start in third-seeded Troy's 9-4 victory against sixth-seeded Old Dominion on Friday, punching the Trojans a ticket to the semifinals where they'd eventually fall to second-seeded Southern Miss. Stewart tied a career high with 7.0 innings pitched, earning his sixth win of the season while allowing nine hits, two earned runs and zero walks while striking out seven Monarchs.
ODU's only damage against Stewart came in the second inning, scoring two runs on four hits, but the senior settled in and worked five consecutive scoreless frames. Stewart stranded two runners on an inning-ending double play in the fifth and set the Monarchs down 1-2-3 in both the sixth and seventh.
In the outing, the Dothan, Ala., native became the fifth pitcher in Troy history to record 250 career strikeouts with his sixth punchout of the game, painting a fastball on the outside corner to end the sixth inning.
Stewart was one of the Sun Belt's most efficient pitchers this season. Following the conclusion of the conference tournament, Stewart's 1.12 WHIP ranks sixth in the Sun Belt and his 1.44 walks allowed per nine innings rank third (min. 50 innings pitched). The righty owns a 6-2 record on the season with 39 strikeouts and a .246 batting average allowed in 50.0 innings, and his 25 career wins are tied for the third-most in Troy history.
