TROY, Ala. - No. 15 Troy topped in-state rival Jacksonville State 12-2 in seven innings at Riddle-Pace Field on Tuesday.
Troy dropped the previous matchup 11-1 in seven innings on March 11, but were ready to attack Jax State starter James Wilson, who also started for the Gamecocks in the first meeting. The Trojans scored one run against Wilson in his 2.0 innings, as Brooks Bryan stole home while Gavin Schrader got into a run down on an attempted steal of second base.Â
The Gamecocks turned to Joe Scarborough in the third, another righty who shut the Trojans down on March 11, but Dillon Kuehl turned on a 97 MPH fastball for a leadoff home run to start off Troy's dynamic day at the plate. Troy scored four runs in the frame on an RBI double by Jimmy Janicki, a sac fly by Sean Darnell and an RBI single by Meier.
Senior lefty Jacob Roettgen gave the Trojans three quality innings to start the ballgame, holding Jax State scoreless while allowing four hits, one walk and a career-high four strikeouts. Colby Frieda earned the win, pitching 2.2 innings with four hits, two earned runs, one walk and tying his career high with four strikeouts. Grady Gorgen pitched 1.1 scoreless innings, retiring all four batters faced and recording one strikeout.
Troy tacked on one run in each of the fourth and fifth innings. Houston Markham knocked in a run on a single to left field in the fourth while Meier scored on an overthrow by Jacksonville State catcher Graham Ashe while stealing second base in the fifth.Â
The Trojans won the ballgame with a five-run seventh inning. After a Darnell RBI single, Kuehl drew an HBP with the bases loaded to put the first two runs on the board. Troy scored two runs on an error by Jax State first baseman Brady Thomas on a Peyton Watts ground ball before the run-rule was put into effect with Kuehl scoring on a wild pitch by Gamecock reliever Owen Arndt.Â
Troy moves to 32-13 on the season, and have been dominant at Riddle-Pace Field with a 20-5 record at home.
Quick Hitters
Quotables
Head Coach Skylar Meade on the offense…
"DK [Dillon Kuehl] certainly opened the door with the swing on Scarborough on that 97, 98, however hard the ball was. We just did a lot of good things. Our baserunning - we had heads up baserunning. Both literally, head up, seeing if I'm being sent or not, and then the Steve steal play was really cool. Something he's capable of doing that maybe other people can't."
Jacob Roettgen on his start…
"Everything was working. Fastball, curveball, splitter. I even sprinkled in a slider. Everything was really working."
Dillon Kuehl on his home run…
"We knew coming in that he throws the fastball really, really hard. I had two strikes on me. I had swung and missed at the pitch before, but I felt good about everything and my goal was just to get the barrel out in front of the plate and was able to do that."
