MONTGOMERY, Ala. - No. 15 Troy held on to beat Alabama State 12-10 behind a six-run fourth inning and a spectacular performance in relief from Colby Frieda.
The Trojans jumped out to an 8-1 lead in the six-run fourth, as junior catcher Brooks Bryan started the fun with a solo home run to lead off the inning. After Harrison Bowman walked, right fielder Gavin Schrader launched the Trojans' second homer of the frame 420 feet over the right-center wall. Singles from Mike Bello and Houston Markham set up a two-run triple down the right field line by Blake Cavill, who scored on a single by Sean Darnell.
Grayson Stewart pitched 3.0 innings of one-run ball in his first start of the season, picking up a pair of strikeouts, but Alabama State scored nine runs when the Trojans turned to the bullpen. In the fourth, the Hornets scored three runs on three hits and a walk against Brock Tapper.
Troy got those three runs back in the fifth with RBI singles from Bello and Markham before Markham scored on a wild pitch, but Alabama State capitalized on a pair of Troy errors in the fifth, scoring four unearned runs against Adam Falinski.Â
Dylan King was phenomenal for the Trojans in the sixth, retiring the Hornets on eight pitches with a pair of strikeouts, but the junior righty exited the ballgame in the seventh after issuing a leadoff walk to third baseman Luke Parmentier. Frieda took over for King in a 2-2 count against right fielder Wilbert Espinal and walked him. Frieda allowed both runners to score on a single and a sac fly, but settled in with back-to-back scoreless frames in the eighth and ninth.
The senior right-hander retired the side in order in the eight, notching a pair of strikeouts after the Trojans added an insurance run in the top of the frame with Jimmy Janicki scoring from third on a double play ball from Bowman. In the ninth, Frieda allowed the tying runs to reach on a double and a walk after opening the inning with a strikeout, but he shut things down with a pair of flyouts to secure the win.Â

Quotable - Head coach Skylar Meade
"I was really proud of the way we were able to understand some of the errors of our ways, and just be the best version of ourselves the last four innings. I thought we did some great things offensively - obviously we scored a large majority in the first five. We just exuded a lot of toughness. We made the correct plays defensively those last four innings. Dylan King's sixth inning was really good. Frieda - we needed somebody to elevate their game and he did that."
