Women’s Tennis Defeats Southern Miss, 4-1

HATTIESBURG, Miss. – The Troy women's tennis team got into the win column for the first time this conference season on Sunday morning, as it defeated Southern Miss 4-1 to close out the first weekend of Sun Belt action.
Troy (6-5, 1-1 SBC) started strong in doubles action and that carried over to singles play, as the Trojans have now won three of its last four matches. Southern Miss (3-5, 0-2 SBC) won just two sets all afternoon.
In doubles, Emilia Namyslo and Veena Nazar kicked things off with a 6-1 win in the No. 2 spot. Valeriia Avdeeva and Maria Guirguis clinched the important first point of the match with a 6-3 victory in the top doubles spot. Avdeeva and Guirguis are a team-best 6-2 when paired together this spring.
In singles, Guirguis extended the Trojan lead to 2-0 thanks to a 6-1, 6-1 win in the No. 2 spot. The junior is 6-4 for the Trojans this spring, with all her wins coming in the second singles spot.
Southern Miss cut Troy's lead in half with a 6-0, 6-0 win in the No. 3 spot to get on the board. However, Troy responded right back, as Nazar recorded a 6-0, 6-3 win in the No. 6 spot. Nazar has won back-to-back singles matches for the first time in her collegiate career.
Avdeeva clinched the match victory for Troy with 6-4, 6-1 win in the No. 4 spot. Avdeeva has been remarkable for Troy this spring, leading the team with a 9-1 record. She has won eight matches in a row.
The remaining two matches went unfinished.
Up Next
The Trojans return home this week for a pair of conference matches. Troy will host Old Dominion on Saturday and James Madison on Sunday. Both matches are slated to start at 10 a.m.
