Women’s Tennis Drops Contest to No. 39 Old Dominion

TROY, Ala. – The Troy women's tennis team battled all morning but it wasn't enough to overcome No. 39 Old Dominion on Saturday at the Lunsford Tennis Complex.
Troy (6-6, 1-2 SBC) got an impressive showing from Valeriia Avdeeva in singles play but couldn't quite string together enough sets to get past the talented Old Dominion (8-3, 3-0 SBC).
The Monarchs opened doubles play with a 6-2 win in the top spot and followed it with a 6-3 win at No. 3 to clinch the early 1-0 lead in the match.
In singles, Avdeeva quickly tied things up with a 6-3, 6-1 win on court 4. The junior has impressed all season, especially in singles, where she has a 10-1 record and has won her last nine matches. Her record is the best on the Troy squad. It was the only point the Trojans won on Saturday.
Old Dominion picked up wins in the No. 2, 3 and 1 spots to clinch the match victory. In the No. 1 spot, Gabrielle Leslie battle the No. 10 player in the country, Sofia Johnson, tough but came up just short.
The teams were playing to clinch but the match on court six counted because it finished almost immediately following the No. 1 match. Court five went unfinished with the players in the third set.
