SPARTANBURG, S.C. - No. 19 Troy dropped a hard-fought battle with USC Upstate 5-4 at Harley Park to even the series at 1-1.
The Trojans led 4-3 after six innings, but the Spartans' seventh-inning rally propelled them to victory. Grayson Stewart had put Upstate down 1-2-3 in the sixth, but a leadoff single followed by an infield single that deflected off the senior right-hander put the pressure on. Upstate evened the game on a fielder's choice, beating the throw to home on a chopper to Stewart, and scored the go-ahead run on a Colby Frieda wild pitch.
Troy starter Noah Edders pitched 5.0 innings and struck out four with one walk. Upstate tallied six hits off the junior right-hander, getting an RBI single and scoring on a first and third stolen base attempt in the second while adding one on an RBI groundout in the fifth.
USC Upstate lefty Max Kaplan went a strong 7.0 innings with a pair of strikeouts. The Trojans recorded ten hits off the southpaw, generating four runs. Shane Lewis knocked in a run on a second-inning single while a two-run double by Sean Darnell and an RBI single by Brooks Bryan gave the Trojans a three-run fifth inning.
Troy recorded two hits off righty Amp Phillips, one of which was a one-out double by Darnell in the top of the ninth, but couldn't cash in the tying run.
The Trojans now sit at 12-3 on the season and will look to take the series from the Spartans in Sunday's rubber match at 12 p.m. CT.

Quotable - Head Coach Skylar Meade
"We had some opportunities early in the game to expand it. We didn't, and then we gift-wrapped four of the five runs, which is unfortunate. It was really multi-faceted. Poorly executed pitches that were unable to be stopped. Some poor decisions on balls in play."
