Florida Invitational Recap
The Troy softball team finished up tournament play in Gainesville, Fla., over the weekend. Playing against Western Michigan, Samford, Florida A&M and No. 3 Florida, the Trojans went 3-2.
The weekend was highlighted by Troy's freshman players – Caiden Oliva, Reaghan Oney and Mya Holt all impressed.
On the first day of the tournament, Oliva shined. She went 5-for-7 with five RBIs, two home runs and two steals in a win over Western Michigan and a loss to Samford. Ultimately, Oliva finished the weekend 8-for-15 with seven RBIs.
While Oney didn't have any multi-hit games, she's been nothing but consistent at the dish recently. The true freshman extended her hitting streak to 10 games – tied for Troy's longest since 2021 – and had three RBIs in Sunday's win over Western Michigan.
Holt threw one of Troy's three complete games with a seven-inning outing in the 6-1 win over Florida A&M. Although she lost her shutout in the final inning, the freshman logged her first career complete game and only allowed one run.
The Trojans kicked off the weekend with a 7-4 win over Western Michigan. A three-run home run off the bat of Oliva erased an early 3-0 deficit, and the Trojans rode the momentum the rest of the way.
Samford bested Troy 5-4, using a sixth-inning home run to snatch the lead late. Despite home runs from Makaley Boswell and Oliva, the Trojans couldn't muster enough offense to get the win.
On Saturday, Troy started the day with a 6-1 win over Florida A&M. Holt locked down the Rattlers while the offense had a team effort – eight different Trojans recorded a hit.
No. 3 Florida downed Troy 11-2 in the second game of the day, with four home runs fueling the Gators. Kate Peters had a stellar 3.1 innings in relief, only allowing one earned run, but Troy couldn't keep up with the home run barrage.
Troy's 9-0 win over Western Michigan was marked by Alyssa Faircloth's first career shutout. She struck out nine batters, allowing only two hits. The Trojans used a six-run sixth inning to end the game in run-rule fashion.
Tough Competition
Auburn has had a strong start to the season, jumping onto the national radar with an undefeated run at the Clearwater Invitational. An upset over No. 9 Oklahoma State pushed them into the Top 25 the following week.
The Tigers are ranked No. 1 in the NCAA RPI, which released for the first time this week.
Auburn is led by Icess Tresvik, who boasts a 1.266 OPS and six home runs on the year, also stealing 10 bases. From the circle, SJ Geurin has pitched 69.1 innings and holds a 0.95 WHIP.
