Women’s Tennis Falls to Georgia State

ATLANTA, Ga. – The Troy women's tennis team battled all morning but lost a tight 4-3 contest to Georgia State on Sunday at the Georgia State Tennis Complex.

Troy (7-7) couldn't string enough singles victories together to overcome the early 1-0 deficit, but forced the Panthers all the way to a third set in the deciding singles match.

Georgia State (3-10) opened the match with a 1-0 lead after winning the doubles point. Valeriia Avdeeva and Maria Guirguis kicked things off with a 6-2 in the top spot. The Panthers responded with a 6-2 win at No. 2 and 6-3 win at No. 3 to take the early lead.

In singles, the Trojans answered with a 6-2, 6-0 win from Avdeeva at No. 3 and a 6-2, 6-4 win from Guirguis at No. 2 to take a 2-1 lead.

Georgia State tied things up with a win at No. 5, before Leena Metwally put Troy up 3-2 with a 6-3, 6-1 win at No. 4.

However, the Trojans couldn't find the elusive final point, as Georgia State won on court 1 and pulled out a three-set win the final spot.

Troy stays on the road next week, as it travels to Coastal Carolina on Friday and Georgia Southern on Sunday.
